After decades of excelling at the JUCO, Division II, and FCS levels, Georgia Southern provided Fritz his first FBS head coaching opportunity in 2014. That was the same year Georgia Southern rose to FBS status, and Fritz handled the transition with ease. He finished 9-3 in his debut year and prevailed in all eight Sun Belt matchups, before following it up with an 8-4 record in his second and final season.

“I know the place well. In 2025, the Cougars were the only FBS team to finish 6-0 in road environments. However, the country’s longest active road win streak snapped last Friday in Lubbock, as Conner Weigman fell inches short on the game-tying two-point attempt against Texas Tech.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Cougars, which sorely needed a statement win to prove their merit as Big 12 contenders. But before they can claim their first Big 12 victory of 2026, they look to sweep their non-conference slate for the second-straight year in a trip to Sun Belt country.

Houston’s offense is noticeably improved over last year’s product, and that was cleared when the team posted 458 yards on Texas Tech. The Cougars are balanced under offensive coordinator Slade Nagle, and the result through three games is the seventh-best yards per game offense in the FBS.

Quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns on the Red Raiders, and he continued his highly-efficient start to the season. The fifth-year senior is connecting on 70.0 of passes and owns a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 7-to-1.

There is more depth in the receiver room this year. Reigning First Team All-Big 12 weapon Amare Thomas is the star of the show, turning 18 receptions into 237 yards and three touchdowns this season — demonstrating impressive skills on both contested catches and accruing extra yards through contact. He’s been supported by breakout sophomore Koby Young, who has become the team’s home-run threat with 24.8 yards per reception and landed on highlight reels for his one-handed touchdown snag in Lubbock. Additionally, Patrick Overmyer has stepped up as a blocker and receiver. He caught three clutch passes on Houston’s near game-tying drive against Texas Tech and ranks second on the team with 16 receptions.

Houston’s 11th-ranked run game didn’t generate the explosives it needed to last week, but the unit thrived with frequent 6-10-yard runs, designing runs for Weigman and running backs Makhi Hughes and Re’Shaun Sanford II. Weigman’s rushing attempts might dwindle this week, before picking back up when Big 12 play resumes, so it’ll be mainly up to the running backs to counter an effective Georgia Southern defense.

The jury remains out on Houston’s defense as to whether it has improved from the 2025 unit. The Cougars struggled in coverage against Oregon State, and those same issues resurfaced at Texas Tech. The Red Raiders converted 6-of-10 third downs with an average distance to go of 8.1 yards. Houston gave up several long completions in critical situations, and that was one of the main determinants of the result. Against an air-oriented Georgia Southern offense, the secondary led by strong safety Jordan Allen (team-high five pass breakups) looks to create the plays they missed in Lubbock.

There have been positives on defense, however. The Cougars allow the ninth-fewest rushing yards in the FBS, surrendering just 62.7 yards per game and 2.4 per carry. Brandon Mack II and Ashton Porter have done a stellar job wreaking havoc on the edges, while Khalil Laufau has excelled on the interior. Ole Miss transfer outside linebacker Jaden Yates has been particularly effective on the second level, generating a team-best 19 tackles.

Georgia Southern Eagles outlook

<img alt="CLEMSON, SC - SEPTEMBER 12: Georgia Southern Eagles head coach Clay Helton during a college football game between the Georgia Southern Eagles and the Clemson Tigers on September 12, 2026, at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, S.C. Clemson only managed 2-of-14 third downs and committed two turnovers in the matchup, but Georgia Southern’s offense couldn’t respond. It had eight three-and-outs — including six consecutive to start the game — ultimately falling two touchdowns short in ACC country.

Then, there was the heartbreaker last Saturday. The Eagles led Jacksonville State 27-17 in the fourth quarter, but the Gamecocks took the lead with two quick touchdowns, including one on a 75-yard punt return. Georgia Southern still had time to recapture the lead, but it threw an interception 13 yards away from the end zone in the final two minutes.

While Georgia Southern receives the luxury of homefield advantage again, Clay Helton and Co. face their toughest opponent yet.

After Oregon State threw for 376 yards and Texas Tech 257 against the Cougars, Georgia Southern will look to attack heavily through the air. The Eagles have the personnel to do so, led by seventh-year quarterback Max Johnson, who started games at LSU, Texas A&M, and North Carolina before winding up at his fourth and final stop. Johnson’s arm has gotten plenty of usage as Georgia Southern ranks fourth in the FBS with 42.7 passing attempts per game. However, the Eagles aren’t getting the most out of their passing game, ranking 117th nationally with 6.1 yards per attempt.

Only eight FBS teams have allowed more 20-yard passing plays than Houston, so Georgia Southern gameplan shouldn’t shift when the Cougars make their first visit to Statesboro. Three wide receivers account for the bulk of the production. Illinois transfer Ashton Hollins has excelled with a career-high 202 yards through three games, however, his status remains unknown due to a shoulder injury suffered in Week 3. That could leave the production in the hands of redshirt freshman Jeremiah Ware and Josh Dallas, who leads the Sun Belt with 21 receptions after missing nearly the entirety of 2025 to injury.

As expected by their passing numbers, the Eagles aren’t running the football much. They’re 130th nationally in attempts, but the result haven’t been bad when they ground it. David Mbadinga posted 103 yards last weekend at Jacksonville State, and he boasts a 5.9 average on the season. However, Georgia Southern ditched the run game early on at Clemson, as the running backs totaled 10 carries for 19 yards in the low-scoring bout.

Defense has been the hallmark of this Georgia Southern team. The defensive front outplayed Clemson’s offensive line, generating 11 tackles for loss and causing the Tigers inefficiencies in the run game. The potency of the defensive line and linebackers was evident when Georgia Southern limited FCS opponent Charleston Southern to eight rushing yards on 31 attempts in Week 1. Three different Eagles — defensive end Anthony Bynum, outside linebacker Festus Davies, and cornerback Chance Gamble — all have at least three tackles for loss. And that doesn’t even include the team’s best returning defensive player, outside linebacker MJ Arnold, who attained All-Sun Belt honors with 6.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss in 2025.

Jax State’s run-centric offense couldn’t buy much on the ground, but the Gamecocks passed pretty well on the Eagles, showing there is more to clean up on the back end. Still, Georgia Southern ranks 32nd nationally in fewest passing yards allowed per game.

Georgia Southern’s defense has been a formidable unit to start the season. However, Houston is a different animal of an offense the Eagles have not faced yet. The Cougars can thrive through the ground and air alike, and the foundation of the success is a remolded offensive line, led by transfers Shadre Hurst, Anthony Boswell, and Drew Terrill. Houston’s run game regularly picks up good yardage before contact, while Conner Weigman has enjoyed clean pockets throughout the season.

Houston will score frequently on the road, but Georgia Southern’s offense hasn’t shown the ability to match. As mentioned earlier, the Eagles’ offense started the Clemson game with six-straight three-and-outs. They’ll score a touchdown or two thanks to significant pickups through the air, but Houston’s front will be overwhelming for Georgia Southern’s offense all game.

Prediction: Houston 38, Georgia Southern 13

Time and date: Saturday, September 26 at 4:00 p.m. ETNetwork: ESPNULocation: Allen E.
