The Sam Houston Bronco volleyball team battled out of a big hole in the fifth set on Tuesday evening to steal a road win from rival Sulphur, 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 20-25, 15-11.

In the fifth set, Sulphur used a 6-2 run to break a 5-5 tie with Aubrie Crochet hitting a shot in the middle for an 11-7 lead. But Sam Houston quickly got two points back on kills by Brookelynn DuBose and Madeline Walker to start an 8-0 run to win the set and match. Two hitting errors gave the Broncos a 12-11 lead, and Ali Wills closed out the match with aces on two of her final three serves.

It was the third time the Broncos (11-6) went to five sets this season. They beat St. Louis Catholic in five sets last week and lost to Barbe in five on Sept. 8.

They never trailed in the first set after starting with a 5-0 lead and battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the second set. Sulphur led 19-13 after a kill from the right side by 13, but Sam Houston pulled even on a 9-3 run that included three kills by Kailyn Mire. Walker closed the second set with a hit from the right side.

Facing a shutout, the Tors (11-7) had a comeback of their own. They rebounded with a 5-0 start in the third set, highlighted by three consecutive kills by Anna Benoit, and never trailed. Sulphur used three consecutive kills by Maliyah Navarre to erase an 8-7 deficit in the fourth set.

Sulphur was led by double-doubles by Navarre (12 kills, 17 digs) and Benoit (39 assists, 10 digs).
