Don Cooper, the longtime White Sox pitching coach and a key figure on the 2005 World Series staff, has died at 70, according to a family statement reported by Sox On 35th. The White Sox issued condolences Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Cooper family announced on Facebook that Donald James Cooper passed away on Sept. 22 in Brentwood, Tenn. The statement said Cooper died peacefully and that funeral arrangements will be communicated once established. He is survived by Ruby, Jaime, Luke, and Kate.<\/p>\n

Former White Sox bench coach Joey Cora posted an Instagram tribute, writing that Cooper was \u201cNot only a great coach, a great Person\u201d and that \u201call he wanted to do in life was to help people.\u201d 2005 World Series MVP Jermaine Dye commented on Cora\u2019s post: \u201cCoop will be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cooper, born Jan. 15, 1956, in New York, pitched in the majors for the Twins, Blue Jays, and Yankees before a long run in the White Sox organization. He served as Chicago\u2019s MLB pitching coach from July 22, 2002, through the end of the 2020 season, when the club parted ways with him alongside the Rick Renteria managerial change. A pillar of the 2005 World Series championship<\/a> staff that delivered four straight complete games in the ALCS, Cooper coached Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland, Chris Sale, Bobby Jenks, and Philip Humber\u2019s perfect game, among others. He also briefly managed the final two games of the 2011 season after Ozzie Guillen<\/a> left.<\/p>\n

The White Sox issued a statement Wednesday afternoon CT offering condolences to Cooper\u2019s family, friends, and fans. The club said Cooper spent 33 seasons as a coach in the organization from 1988 to 2020, including 18 full seasons as the major-league pitching coach, and served on the staff of the 2005 World Series champions. \u201cForever in our thoughts,\u201d the team wrote.<\/p>\n
