The consecutive grades open the door for TEA to step in.

Groups like Keep Austin Schools Independent (KASI) are concerned with what an intervention could do. KASI co-founder Sharyn Vane says the move is not what is best for students.

“We see what’s happened in Houston and in Fort Worth and in all the other districts where TEA has come in and removed the power of the elected school board,” said Vane.

City leaders are chiming in on the discussion. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson recently called on families at Burnet and Webb middle schools to petition the TEA to close the failing campuses to avoid intervention.

Watson suggests using a parent petition for action, which is a request under Texas law that lets parents decide what happens next at a failing school. According to TEA’s Laws and Rules page, if the majority of parents at a campus sign a petition asking for the closure of the school instead of the state taking over the entire district, the Texas education commissioner generally has to order that action.

While Vane opposes an intervention, she says the decision comes down to those impacted.

“This is a decision that the parents at Webb and Burnett need to make for themselves,” said Vane.

She says it’s important that families at the schools have all the information that they need to know.

In a letter to families last week, Austin ISD Superintendent Matias Segura said the district is not promoting the petition.

“Austin ISD will not participate in gathering signatures or advocacy of the petition as we continue our student-focused work and allow impacted families to use their voice without our guidance,” the letter said.

The district has appealed the two preliminary F ratings from Burnet and Webb. After reviewing, TEA will release the final ratings in December.

[11
5175,836,132,134,133,5604,1570,163,223,27,1569,835
post-446374","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-abigail-vaerewyck","tag-app-education","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news","tag-austin-what-you-need-to-know","tag-ctv","tag-education","tag-news","tag-texas","tag-texas-what-you-need-to-know","tag-vod
["GET
