\u201cOil guys\u201d often thank Billy Bob Thornton<\/a> for a monologue he delivered about renewable energy in Taylor Sheridan<\/a>\u2019s Landman<\/a>, Thornton recently<\/a> said on Joe Rogan\u2019s podcast. <\/p>\n

In episode three of the West Texas-set show\u2019s first season, Thornton\u2019s character, oil crisis manager Tommy Norris, practically scoffs at his attorney for calling wind turbines \u201cclean energy.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have any idea how much diesel they have to burn to mix that much concrete or make that steel and haul this s— out here and put it together with a 450-foot crane?\u201d Norris tells her as they observe a wind farm. \u201cIn its 20-year life span, it won\u2019t offset the carbon footprint of making it.\u201d <\/p>\n

Norris continued, professing skepticism over the feasibility of a world powered solely by electric energy. \u201cOur whole lives depend\u201d on oil, he said. <\/p>\n

When the episode came out last November, it stirred debate on social media around the accuracy of Norris\u2019 statements about the environmental footprint of wind turbines. <\/p>\n

A writer for the Los Angeles Times criticized the show in a January column<\/a> for containing \u201cfossil fuel propaganda.\u201d The article cited research showing a shorter carbon payback period than what Norris described in Landman.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople try to politicize everything. The fact of the matter is that Taylor with that show is not taking a side,\u201d Thornton told Rogan, referring to the online stir around Norris\u2019 speech. \u201cHe\u2019s just saying here\u2019s a look behind the curtain at how this works.\u201d <\/p>\n

Landman, which has taped across North Texas, returns to Paramount+ for a second season on Nov. 16. The sophomore debut sees Norris leading M-Tex Oil after the death of his friend and former boss, Monty Miller. <\/p>\n
