A San Antonio criminal defense attorney says she was told to cover up while appearing in court Monday to schedule a trial date.<\/p>\n
Mariah Medina said she owns several dresses like the sleeveless one she wore to Judge Yolanda Huff\u2019s courtroom. But Medina said the judge had more to say than simply setting a court date.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe said that the dress that I was wearing, which is the dress I\u2019m wearing now, was inappropriate,\u201d said Medina, who owns Mariah Medina Law.<\/p>\n
Medina said Huff took issue with the fact that the dress did not have sleeves. She said the judge spoke to her in front of people in the courtroom.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe had me come back around and advise me that we have a duty to cover up and be modest, and that in the future, I should always wear a blazer,\u201d Medina said.<\/p>\n
Medina said it was the first time she had been told her clothing was inappropriate for court. Bexar County\u2019s local court rules state that lawyers should wear business attire. The rules do not spell out a requirement that attorneys cover their shoulders.<\/p>\n
Sources in the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office told us their attorneys are expected to cover their shoulders in court. Judges can also set rules for their own courtrooms.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had no notice that this was a requirement of the court,\u201d Medina said.<\/p>\n
The incident and the debate over Medina\u2019s dress have since drawn widespread attention online. Medina, who has been an attorney for about a year, said she has received thousands of comments on social media.<\/p>\n
\u201cOverwhelmingly positive, but there are some individuals that are just completely vile, essentially telling me my career is over before it even started,\u201d Medina said.<\/p>\n
Bexar County attorney Joe Holscher said Medina\u2019s outfit is common in local courtrooms.<\/p>\n
\u201cI see women attorneys dress like Mariah Medina was all the time. It\u2019s unremarkable. It\u2019s actually better than some attorneys dress, so to me it\u2019s completely normal. I can\u2019t even think of specific instances because it\u2019s so commonplace,\u201d said Holscher, an attorney with HGC Law Firm.<\/p>\n
