{"id":447520,"date":"2026-09-25T16:32:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T16:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/447520\/"},"modified":"2026-09-25T16:32:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T16:32:14","slug":"westbury-high-school-senior-shot-and-killed-near-campus-houston-police-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/447520\/","title":{"rendered":"Westbury High School senior shot and killed near campus, Houston police say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">HOUSTON \u2013 A 17-year-old Westbury High School senior was shot and killed near the southwest Houston campus on Friday, and authorities are searching for the person responsible, Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The student\u2019s name has not been released.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cThis happened just outside of the school,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cSchool is safe. Staff is safe. We\u2019re working diligently to make sure we get someone in custody as soon as possible \u2014 to make sure this area is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">HPD said the call came in around 8:21 a.m. The shooting happened just outside the campus grounds on Dryad Street near 11911 Chimney Rock Road, according to HPD. Police said there was never an active threat inside the school, and students and staff are safe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Investigators have recovered video from a nearby apartment complex and are canvassing the neighborhood for additional surveillance footage and information. Police are also interviewing two witnesses, while homicide detectives remain at the scene. Authorities said the community has license plate readers that could help investigators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">VIDEO: Full press conference<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking at leads,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cThis is something that should not happen in our community. Young people at the moment making bad decisions. We have got leads. We have got video cameras. The community has license plate readers all around it. Witnesses at the moment are being interviewed. Homicide detectives are at the scene, and we\u2019re working toward making sure this gets resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">HPD is receiving help from 25 additional state troopers as the search continues, Diaz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Diaz said he spoke with the victim\u2019s grandmother, mother and aunt, who are \u201cbeside themselves.\u201d HPD is providing support to the family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Westbury High School was placed in secure mode \u2014 meaning no one in, no one out \u2014 after the shooting, according to Houston ISD.
