HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Westbury High School student has died after being shot near the school in southwest Houston on Friday morning, according to police.<\/p>\n

The Houston Police Department said the shooting happened at about 8:20 a.m. near Dryad Drive and Chimney Rock.<\/p>\n

In a 10 a.m. update, police confirmed the victim was a 17-year-old senior high school student who died from gunshot wounds. According to investigators, some people were gathered when someone came out of a wooded area near a complex, and shots were fired.<\/p>\n

“And from that, we believe some words were exchanged, and someone produced a handgun, and unfortunately the young man lost his life as a result of what I call a ‘cowardly act,'” HPD Police Chief Noe Diaz said during the press conference.<\/p>\n

Houston police give an update after they say a Westbury High School student was shot and killed near the school Friday morning.<\/p>\n

Police said no suspect is in custody at this time. The chief added they have been talking to witnesses to figure out what happened.<\/p>\n

SkyEye13 flew over heavy police activity near the school, which Houston ISD confirmed was placed in “secure mode” while police investigate the nearby incident.<\/p>\n
