A North Texas licensed professional counselor was convicted Thursday in a multimillion dollar scheme to defraud the federal government by prescribing phony and unnecessary treatments for depression.<\/p>\n
Jurors in Fort Worth found Kevin Curry, 64, guilty of giving kickbacks to active-duty service members, military veterans and their families for transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy<\/a> they did not need. In many cases, court documents say, patients never received the treatments.<\/p>\n Curry presented himself to patients as a physician, using doctors\u2019 credentials without their knowledge to bill TRICARE<\/a>, the military\u2019s health insurer, according to court documents.<\/p>\n Prosecutors say Curry paid patients $5.5 million in bribes and kickbacks between September 2022 and the end of 2025, billing $26 million to insurance. Of that, TRICARE paid about $17 million.<\/p>\n The counselor then used the proceeds to fund stays at five-star hotels, pricey furniture, a lavish casino-themed party for employees and TRICARE beneficiaries, and a gold-plated Tesla Cybertruck<\/a> worth more than $100,000, court documents say.<\/p>\n In a statement, assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald said Curry exploited a critical health care program in an \u201caffront to the military community and the American public.\u201d<\/p>\n Curry, who lives in Frisco<\/a>, did not respond to a text message or phone call Friday afternoon. He operated clinics, Acuity TMS, in Plano and Fort Worth, and a third, Emerald Coast TMS in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The clinics\u2019 websites were no longer active Friday.<\/p>\n
