{"id":448935,"date":"2026-09-27T01:46:06","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T01:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/448935\/"},"modified":"2026-09-27T01:46:06","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T01:46:06","slug":"city-council-candidate-arrested-in-connection-to-ice-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/448935\/","title":{"rendered":"City Council candidate arrested in connection to ICE protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Supporters, community members, and legal advocates held a press conference Saturday afternoon outside the Travis County Jail following the arrest of Misael Ramos, a Democratic Socialists of America candidate for City Council and TSEU member. <\/p>\n<p>According to the Texas State Employees Union, Ramos was arrested Saturday morning in connection with Sunday\u2019s demonstration protesting the shooting of Austin resident Wilber Rafael Garc\u00e9s P\u00e9rez by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. He was later released Saturday evening. <\/p>\n<p>The press conference addressed the arrests made in connection with the demonstration, the apparent treatment of protesters by law enforcement, and concerns about conditions people feel are being imposed on people arrested at protests. <\/p>\n<p>Speakers at the press conference called for transparency regarding the arrests, access to counsel, fair treatment of people in custody, and respect for constitutional rights during demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>Garc\u00e9s P\u00e9rez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan national and DoorDash delivery driver, was shot by an ICE officer in North Austin on Sunday. He was transported to the hospital and subsequently transferred into federal immigration custody. <\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/anderson-high-school-students-walk-out-after-ice-involved-shooting-in-north-austin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Anderson High School students walk out after ICE-involved shooting in North Austin<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His attorney, Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, has said that a bullet remains lodged in his back and has raised concerns about the medical care he has received following the shooting while in detention.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Austin Police Department, at least four people were arrested during the Sunday demonstration on charges including riot, resisting arrest, and assault on a peace officer. DPS also reported an additional arrest for obstructing a highway or other passageway. <\/p>\n<p>Jail records indicate that Ramos has been charged with a Class B misdemeanor riot charge after attending the demonstration.
