A common opening comment is “How did we get so lucky?”

In the middle of the fastest-growing metroplex in the country, Colleyville is a hidden oasis.

When friends visit from outside the area, the first thing they notice is the trees and the peace. It’s hard to believe we’re only minutes from DFW International Airport, Fort Worth, Arlington and Dallas. We enjoy the amenities of the big cities — we especially enjoy our season tickets to Bass Performance Hall — but we love coming home to the peace and quiet of Colleyville.

When I first moved here in 1991, we had two horses with plenty of places to ride. Things have changed — the Cotton Belt Trail is now paved, and the pasture where we used to ride is now called Remington Park — but the country feel is still the same.

Colleyville is one of the safest cities in Texas. I’m sure crime exists here but, honestly, in my 30-plus years living here, I’ve never seen it.

We also have some of the best schools in Texas. My girls went all the way through Colleyville Elementary, Colleyville Middle School and Grapevine High School. My younger daughter taught math at Grapevine High School for several years.

In recent years, Colleyville has gained several great restaurants. At the risk of leaving some out, our favorites include Next Bistro, Gloria’s, Stone House and Loveria Caffe.

One of our favorite community events is Stars and Guitars, our annual Independence Day celebration. Patty and I have been known to cut a rug when the country music cranks up. This event also offers one of the best fireworks shows anywhere. And we have some top-notch baseball fields where we watch our grandkids play ball.

Patty and I are both retired — she was a schoolteacher, I owned a couple of information technology consulting companies — but one of the great things about Colleyville is the opportunity to stay active. If you are retired around here, there is no reason to be bored.

We particularly like the Cotton Belt Trail that runs alongside the railroad track. Patty walks 3 miles almost every day (I’m not quite that dedicated). We’ve met many new friends on that trail.

Finally, we’ve consistently enjoyed the many opportunities to stay involved and give back. Through the Colleyville Rotary Club and its signature event, Dancing for the Stars, we’ve supported local organizations such as GRACE (Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange), the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, the Grapevine Colleyville Education Foundation, the Community Enrichment Center, 6 Stones, Serving Our Seniors and Tarrant Area Food Bank.

This past June marked the end of my year as district governor for Rotary International in the greater Tarrant County and surrounding area, so I’m traveling less and spending more time in Colleyville.

Internationally, our Colleyville Rotary Club provides clean water, wheelchairs and polio vaccines in places like Mexico, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, India and Sri Lanka. I’m also a member of the Colleyville Lions Club, Colleyville Chamber of Commerce and the Colleyville Executive Organization.

Now and then we think about downsizing, and I’m sure we will someday. But it’ll be hard to beat Colleyville.

Jon Bullock is a retired information technology consultant and was recently the Rotary International district governor for the Fort Worth region.

Colleyville

Total population: 26,012
Male: 51% | Female: 49%

Race:
White: 69% | Hispanic: 12% | Black: 4% | Asian: 10%

Age
0-9: 11%
10-19: 15%
20-29: 5%
30-39: 8%
40-49: 14%
50-59: 16%
60-69: 18%
70-79: 10%
80 and older: 2%

Education
High school: 99%
Bachelor’s degree or higher: 69%

Click on the link to view the schools’ Texas Education Agency ratings:

Colleyville Elementary School

Taylor Elementary School
Colleyville Heritage High School

Grapevine High School

The Bridges Academy Alternative School
Colleyville Middle School

Heritage Middle School
Heritage Elementary School

Click on the link to view the schools’ Texas Education Agency ratings:

This <a target=”_blank”
