A Texas man<\/a> who alleged to provide professional mental health care to servicemembers and veterans was found guilty last week of defrauding his clients in an elaborate scheme that brought him millions of dollars, leading to wild purchases that included a casino-themed party and a gold-colored Cybertruck<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A federal jury convicted Kevin Curry of Frisco, the owner and operator of two purported mental health clinics in Texas, to three counts of health care fraud, three counts of offering and paying illegal health care kickbacks, and three counts of engaging in monetary transactions in criminal derived property. Curry faces up to 10 years in prison on each count when he’s sentenced at a later date.<\/p>\n

According to an announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice<\/a>, Curry through his purported clinics billed TRICARE-a healthcare program for members of the U.S. military and veterans-more than $26 million for mental health treatments that either never happened, were not necessary or were guaranteed through kickbacks. TRICARE paid Curry about $17 million. In the announcement, federal officials said Curry’s crimes are “an affront to the military community and the American public.”<\/p>\n

“Kevin Curry shamelessly preyed on the trust of servicemembers, veterans, and their families, siphoning millions from TRICARE through lies and coercion,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould. “This conviction sends an unmistakable message that those who manipulate our military community and defraud federal healthcare programs will face the full force of federal prosecution.”<\/p>\n

The DOJ said Curry laundered some of the $17 million he received from TRICARE, putting it toward hotel stays, “a lavish casino-themed party” and what it’s calling “a gold-plated Tesla Cybertruck.”<\/p>\n

The 2024 Cybertruck was seized by federal agents<\/a> in January. Curry was charged in June<\/a> as part of a healthcare fraud sweep that included 13 defendants across North Texas.<\/p>\n
