Court filings from June 2024 revealed James later admitted to the slayings, telling authorities he was overwhelmed by feelings of \u201cimpending doom\u201d that morning.<\/p>\nFollowing the killings in San Antonio, police say James traveled north to Austin, launching a series of attacks across the city over the next eight hours:<\/p>\n
10:45 a.m.: An Austin ISD Police Department officer was shot and wounded outside Northeast Early College High School in an unprovoked attack.<\/p>\n
11:50 a.m.: In South Austin, James allegedly shot and killed 32-year-old Emmanuel Pop Ba while stealing his vehicle. He then shot and killed 24-year-old Sabrina Rahman, who witnessed the carjacking, narrowly missing her infant child in a nearby stroller.<\/p>\n
4:50 p.m.: A cyclist riding on West Slaughter Lane was shot and injured. The victim survived after calling 911.<\/p>\n
6:45 p.m.: Officers responding to a burglary call in the Circle C neighborhood were met with gunfire. One Austin Police Department officer was wounded in the exchange. Inside the residence, police discovered the bodies of 56-year-old Katherine Short and 30-year-old Lauren Short.<\/p>\n
James fled the neighborhood in a stolen vehicle, leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit before crashing near State Highway 45 and FM 1826. Officers took him into custody with a handgun in his possession. The following day, James attempted to escape from the Travis County Jail before being forcibly subdued by deputies.<\/p>\n
The road to trial<\/p>\n
The criminal proceedings faced significant delays regarding James\u2019s mental capacity. In October 2024, a judge deemed James incompetent to stand trial, ordering him transferred to a state mental health facility for evaluation and treatment.<\/p>\n
His competency was officially declared restored by a judge in July 2025, paving the way for prosecution to resume. A tentative trial date was formally established in April of this year.<\/p>\n
James currently faces more than a dozen charges across jurisdictions. The Travis County indictments include multiple counts of capital murder, attempted capital murder, capital murder by terror threat, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.<\/p>\n
