{"id":449757,"date":"2026-09-28T02:10:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-28T02:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/449757\/"},"modified":"2026-09-28T02:10:08","modified_gmt":"2026-09-28T02:10:08","slug":"protesters-return-to-north-austin-site-of-ice-shooting-call-for-agency-to-leave-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/449757\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesters return to North Austin site of ICE shooting, call for agency to leave Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 One week after a Venezuelan man was shot and wounded by an ICE agent in North Austin, demonstrators returned to the intersection where it happened to call for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave Austin and Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The shooting involved 28-year-old Venezuelan national Wilber Garces Perez, who was shot and injured by an ICE agent one week ago. On Sunday afternoon, demonstrators rallied in the same spot, around the same time Perez was shot seven days earlier. They chanted, held signs and called for ICE to leave the city and the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to show that our power comes together when we&#8217;re organized, and we can demand the things that we need to see change,\u201d said Yayo Ayala, a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam, a demonstrator, said, \u201cNo one is illegal on stolen land, and no one should be shot in their homes, in their towns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another demonstrator, Michael Do, said, \u201cI still feel outrage. It doesn&#8217;t go away. David Torres, an Austinite, said he was heading to Pearsall, where others were planning to protest outside the ICE facility where Perez is being held.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we need to be confronting the institutions that have the power to free Wilbur and get him surgery,\u201d Torres said. He added, \u201cSo this protest here that the so called in this parking lot is an entirely performative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday evening, ICE commented on the shooting and the ongoing protests. In a statement, the agency said it is \u201ccommitted to protecting the public\u2019s constitutional rights, including the rights to free speech and peaceful assembly, while carrying out its law enforcement mission,\u201d and added that \u201cICE is unapologetically enforcing our nation&#8217;s immigration laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sunday afternoon protest remained peaceful.
