Flags from several Latin American countries waved throughout the crowd:\u00a0Karol G’s native Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and of course many from Mexico.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Mexico, I love and bless you, and honestly, your culture has inspired me tremendously,” she said in Spanish, backed by a female mariachi group for a few songs.<\/p>\n
It was enough to send even a casual fan home happy – then she introduced Drake.<\/p>\n
The unofficial Houstonian<\/a> appeared midway through the set, joining Karol for their first\u00a0live performance of “Ah\u00ed,” a duet from her\u00a0“No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto” album. His cornrows and superstar smile were instantly recognizable.<\/p>\n Drake thanked “the incredible woman that is Karol G” before asking if she wanted “uno mas?”<\/p>\n “Uno?” she replied. “Dos!”<\/p>\n Drake obliged with a run through recent No. 1 single\u00a0“Janice STFU” and “Once Dance,” a requested “classic” from Karol. (Joey Guerra)<\/p>\n Karol kicked off the night with “Latina Foreva” and “Un Gatito me Llam\u00f3,” surrounded by dancers on an elaborate, multilevel stage made to resemble jungles and cliffs. Initially, the crowd roars were so loud that they drowned out everything else.\u00a0Fans wore bright\u00a0orange and pink, sequins and flowers in their hair, a nod to the night’s\u00a0tropical theme.<\/p>\n It was all sex, heat and energy, from the costumes to the movements. Every time the camera focused on Karol’s gyrating hips, which was frequently, the screams climbed several decibels. Her dancers were frequently awe-inspiring, executing a unique choreography that not only looked great, but created space and felt intentional.<\/p>\n She climbed atop a giant macaw during “Papasito” and wore a feather headdress for a reworked “Tropicoqueta,” executed with the precision of a music video. She moved through the crowd, greeting ecstatic fans who held up signs and snapped photos, before landing at a small stage designed as a shallow, illuminated pool. The setlist weaved seamlessly through bachata (“Amiga Mia”), merengue (“Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido”), ranchera (“200 Copas”) and lots of pop.\u00a0“Alguien Que te Amaba” was a standout, a Tejano-inspired cumbia<\/a> co-written by Pete Astudillo, who helped create Selena’s biggest hits and sang several duets with her. Karol donned a cowboy hat for the song, a thrilling throwback to ’90s Tejano.<\/p>\n “I don’t want this night to end,” she told the crowd.<\/p>\n It did eventually – the frothy pop of “Provenza” quickly morphing into Ti\u00ebsto’s pulsing\u00a0dance remix.
