Maybe they’re a high-roller who knows the owner; maybe an influencer. Either way, Terry Black’s Barbecue is an equal-opportunity smoke shop and wants you to get the VIP treatment too.

The legendary Central Texas barbecue joint recently launched the Terry Black’s Experience, a $150 hospitality experience that takes diners behind the scenes with five-star service and a massive amount of food.

Experience-maxxing

As costs begin to eat into restaurants, experience-maxxing is an essential lifeline. And Dallas eats it up. Our long love affair with an “experience” has brought us innovative concepts contrived from tales, matchas finished with an entire serving of banana pudding and, lest we forget, photo booths popping up at North Texas bars and restaurants.

Sign up for the Food & Drink newsletter to get the latest stories delivered to your inbox

THANK YOU!

You’re all set.

CLOSE

Experiences, as with most things, come in different forms: the good, the bad and the ugly. The Observer stopped by Terry Black’s Barbecue Dallas to vet the Terry Black’s Experience. Spoiler: It’s likely the best barbecue deal in Dallas.

All smoke?

The Terry Black’s Experience bills itself as a “beyond the tray” experience with behind-the-scenes insight. It begins with check-in at the bar. The hospitality is immediate, and the bartender offers you a drink included with the experience. Commit to the Terry Black’s Experience and order the Black Margarita, a jet-black frozen margarita made with a top-secret black mix. Legend has it that not even the employees know what’s in the black mix.

Afterward, the team takes you to the pits. The pit room runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with multiple 1,000-gallon offset smokers cooking an average of 25,000 pounds of brisket a week. Pitmasters are happy to answer any questions about the prized low-and-slow smoking process, techniques, traditions and history of the Black family.

On any typical day, you’ll find the dinner room filled with greasy trays of barbecue carcasses dotting tables, as happy diners lean back with barbecue sauce-stained cheeks and the meat sweats. It’s one of the purest Texan experiences, and it begins with waiting in line. Unless you’re there for the experience.

No lie: no lines

Perhaps the biggest perk of all, the Terry Black’s Experience requires no waiting. Mosey on into your reserved table and let your anxiety go by the wayside. No mental calculations by a scale required. The $150 gets you a feast.

The package includes a “sampling” of all the meats. Sample is an understatement. Prime brisket, a giant beef rib, pork ribs, sausage, and smoked turkey fill a tray. Another tray arrives with every scratch-made side, including macaroni and cheese, potato salad, green beans, pinto beans, cream corn, cole slaw and Mexican rice. The dino rib alone would put barbecue lovers back a solid $70.

Dessert is included, and gluttony prevails. A banana pudding, checkered tray of gooey peach cobber, cup of chocolate pudding, and mini pecan pie land on the table once you’ve thrown in the towel on the ´cue.

The spread is so generous that making a dent in the meal is a feat in itself. Our leftovers lasted days, feeding four teenagers and then some. Two other diners told us their leftovers weighed more than nine pounds combined.

Don’t forget to pick up your free piece of merch. There’s a stylish array of shirts and hats to choose from.

Now, here’s the bummer: parking.

Then the womp-womp: parking

We parked at 3028 Main St., after circling Deep Ellum for 20 minutes. We paid $12.71 on ParkMobile for 1 hour and 23 minutes, the max time it allowed. We arrived back at our vehicle at 4:21 p.m. and received a $97.00 citation in the mail a week later.

The lot has more than one payment app. According to Parking Revenue Recovery Services, patrons are supposed to look for other methods to pay if ParkMobile caps out or does not have extended time available.

For diners unfamiliar with the parking setup, the situation can turn an afternoon of barbecue into an expensive surprise. It’s an ongoing problem that has damned the Cultural District.

The Terry Black’s Experience is available at the Dallas and Fort Worth locations from noon to 9 p.m. Prepaid reservations are available on OpenTable.

The meat tray offered up in the Terry Black Experience.
