The potential for flooding is expected to shift from the American Southwest toward the southern High Plains and Central Texas before reaching Southeast Texas. Houston’s greatest rain concerns will come Thursday, although the heaviest rainfall currently appears most likely to set up north and west of the region. A small eastward shift could raise the potential for localized flooding around Houston.

Here’s when the threat could reach different parts of the state.

Texas flood risk timeline

Monday: Heavy rain threatens the desert Southwest

The first major concern is across the Four Corners region in the desert Southwest, where widespread rainfall could occur where soil is already near saturation from monsoons. The Weather Prediction Center has placed a level 3 of 4 risk, or at least a 40% chance, of excessive rainfall in parts of New Mexico, northern Arizona, southern Utah and southwestern Colorado.

Burn scars, rocky terrain and narrow canyons could worsen flooding, especially in areas hit hard by recent monsoonal flooding.

In Texas, Monday’s flood threat is mainly confined to far West Texas. El Paso is under a level 2 of 4 risk, or at least a 15% chance, of excessive rainfall.

Tuesday: Flood threat expands toward the Texas Panhandle

Heavy rainfall is expected to spread from the Four Corners into the southern High Plains, bringing a heightened flood threat to more of Texas.

Amarillo, Lubbock and surrounding parts of the Texas Panhandle are in a level 3 of 4 risk area for excessive rainfall. It stretches from the New Mexico border north toward Colorado. Parts of Arizona and New Mexico also face a heightened threat.

Wednesday: Rain risk spreads into Central Texas

As the storm system moves across the southern Plains, the threat shifts southeast. Parts of Central Texas are in a level 3 of 4 risk of excessive rainfall, with a broader level 2 of 4 flood risk along much of the Interstate 35 corridor from Austin and San Antonio toward the border with Mexico.

FALL FRONTS: With Houston’s first fall cold front in view, here’s what El Niño can – and can’t – tell us.

Rain chances are expected to increase late Wednesday in the Austin and San Antonio area. A front could help trigger showers and storms that bring localized flooding into Thursday.

Farther east, a level 1 of 4 flood risk extends from roughly the Brazos River Valley to northwest Houston. Southeast Texas faces a greater concern Thursday, when the region is under a level 2 of 4 risk.

Thursday: Highest local concern for Southeast Texas

Heavy downpours could cause localized flash flooding across Southeast Texas. The heaviest rainfall currently appears most likely west of Interstate 45, including the Brazos Valley and other western counties. Areas east of I-45 and along the coast could see higher totals if the axis of heaviest rainfall shifts east. Its exact position remains uncertain.

Rain could arrive in several rounds. Repeated downpours over the same area would increase the chance of water collecting on roads and in low-lying spots.

Friday into the weekend: Rain may linger

The storm system is expected to weaken, but showers and thunderstorms could continue into the weekend as abundant moisture remains over the region. The flood threat should gradually ease, though additional rain could add to runoff concerns in areas that already received heavy amounts.

What Houston residents should watch

For now, the forecast points to a localized flood threat in Houston. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are possible across much of Southeast Texas through the weekend. Some parts of Central Texas could see 4 to 6 inches, including areas along the I-35 corridor.

FLOOD TRACKER: With the potential for flooding this week, stay informed with the Houston Chronicle’s interactive flood map.

Stay weather-aware from Wednesday through the weekend, especially if you live north or west of Houston or travel through areas that receive repeated downpours. Heavy rain can quickly cover roads, so never drive through a flooded roadway. Houston’s flood potential Friday into Saturday will depend partly on how much rain falls Wednesday and Thursday, and where.

Keep monitoring this week’s forecast as the storm system evolves and a clearer picture emerges of where the heaviest rain will fall.

Subscribe

<a data-ylk="slk:There's more to Houston with the Chronicle.
