Clay Club SMTX took its love of clay on the road, bringing members to Austin for a field trip filled with all things clay and other art forms along the way. The trip blended education, camaraderie and shopping for the perfect day trip on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The group took off from Dunbar Recreation Center bright and early and headed in a van to Armadillo Clay. The art supply store mixes and packs its own materials and has a studio space. After the tour, the members got a chance to shop the store’s extensive collection. They also got to explore the ceramic studio next door, East Side Pot Shop.

Everyone headed to Kinda Tropical for lunch before stopping by OMG Squee for boba and other sweet treats. OMG Squee received some fame after it was redesigned by the “Fab Five” and featured in Season 6 of “Queer Eye.” While in the area, members could also visit Sage Studio & Gallery, a studio space for artists with disabilities.

Then the club headed to Broad Studios Club House, where officer Karly Schlievert works part-time. The large studio space offers a broad range of options for studio packages and courses, and Schlievert gave members the grand tour. In the same parking lot is The Mosaic Workshop, so members could do a walk-through tour of that as well. Detailed mosaic murals lined every wall of the studio as people created mosaics of their own, meticulously mapping out the small patterns that, from a distance, come together to form the bigger picture.

The last stop of the day was at Cathedral of Junk. The massive structure, created by Vince Hannemann and located in his backyard, stands three stories high. The various objects — toys, shopping carts, electronics, random pieces of metal and bottles, and even ceramics, to name a few — were organized so that there were color-themed rooms and various points of interest.
