As red-light runners grow bolder on Dallas streets, this family’s story needs to be heard<\/a><\/p>\nDallas County Assistant District Attorney Lauren Black told jurors that blood taken from\u00a0Pollis at the hospital showed her blood alcohol content was \u201cwell over\u201d the legal limit, though she did not say how much.<\/p>\n
According to an arrest-warrant affidavit reported by The Dallas Morning News, a Dallas police officer responded to the hospital where\u00a0Pollis had been taken\u00a0and observed that she had “glassy eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcoholic beverage” coming from her. Pollis told an officer she had a single margarita infused with tequila shots, the affidavit said.<\/p>\n
Defense attorney Scott Palmer conceded in his opening statement that his client was speeding and ran the red light. But she was not intoxicated, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Multiple witnesses had said they did not smell alcohol on her and that she did not appear drunk, Palmer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Body camera video recorded that day will show her speech was not slurred and that other than her injured ankle, she was able to stand without wobbling, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were five people in there with her,\u201d Palmer said of the ambulance that took Pollis to the hospital. \u201cNone of them said they smelled alcohol.\u201d<\/p>\n
Palmer also alleged that the blood evidence was mishandled at the hospital.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are glaring gaps and holes\u201d in the prosecution\u2019s case, he said.<\/p>\n
After the crash<\/p>\n
Tignor said after the collision, the Lexus stopped momentarily and then began to drive away.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fearing the driver was going to flee, he followed until the SUV stopped about 100 yards away.\u00a0Tignor said he parked at an angle next to it to try to keep it from leaving.<\/p>\n
He said\u00a0Pollis looked disheveled and appeared to be favoring one leg when she got out.<\/p>\n
When Black asked whether he smelled alcohol on\u00a0Pollis, Tignor said, \u201cI did not smell alcohol. Not at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other testimony Monday, Wallace\u2019s father, David Wallace, told the jury that his daughter decided she wanted to attend\u00a0SMU during a family trip to his alma mater.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe just fell in love with\u00a0SMU, the campus and Dallas in general,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Wallace described his daughter as kind and generous.<\/p>\n

At the end of his testimony, David Wallace smiled as the prosecutor showed him a photo of his daughter taken during a family trip. It was one of her favorites, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When the prosecutor showed him a photo taken during her autopsy, tears welled in his eyes and his voice trembled as he confirmed it was Honor. His wife, Caroline, and their other daughter, Harper, wept from their seats in the courtroom.<\/p>\n
Pollis\u2019 trial will continue Tuesday before Judge\u00a0Jennifer\u00a0Balido.
