Forecasters say the biggest concern is not necessarily one round of severe storms, but repeated rounds of rain and thunderstorms that could dump heavy rainfall over the same areas. Exactly where the heaviest rain will fall remains uncertain, but the threat will need to be watched closely across Southeast Texas.<\/p>\n
The Houston-area forecast remains hot Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the mid-90s and only isolated storm chances. By Wednesday, rain and thunderstorm chances will increase sharply.<\/p>\n
A slow-moving upper-level trough moving across the western United States will merge with moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Polo near Baja California before pushing east, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n
At the same time, humid Gulf air will surge into Southeast Texas.<\/p>\n
That combination could load the atmosphere with unusually high amounts of moisture. NWS Houston\/Galveston said rain totals could reach 2 to 2.4 inches across Southeast Texas through the weekend\u2014roughly in the 90th to 97th percentile of historical values, with some areas near the Brazos Valley potentially reaching even higher levels.<\/p>\n
Wednesday’s forecast for parts of Southeast Texas already calls for a 50 percent chance of rain, with thunderstorms possible during the afternoon.<\/p>\n
The threat could become more significant Thursday and Friday as the main upper-level system digs into the Plains and North Texas.<\/p>\n
NWS Houston\/Galveston previously placed parts of Southeast Texas under a slight risk for excessive rainfall Wednesday and all of Southeast Texas under a slight risk Thursday, though the location of the heaviest rainfall could still shift as the system develops.<\/p>\n
That’s one of the biggest questions facing forecasters.<\/p>\n
Current modeling generally places the heaviest rainfall axis west of Interstate 45, potentially affecting areas toward the Brazos Valley and other western parts of Southeast Texas.
