You’ll probably see a higher energy bill than usual this month, even if you’re on a fixed rate. That’s because CenterPoint Energy is going to be increasing the transmission and distribution charge.

According to reporting on the increase from the Houston Chronicle, the charge, which was 4.99 cents per kilowatt-hour, is about to be raised to 6.41 cents per kilowatt-hour. They estimate that the increase will result in a roughly $14 increase.

Ken Head, vice president of Savant Energy, explained that unlike the actual energy rates, the transmission and distribution charge can be changed even when you’re on a fixed-rate plan. They’re also somewhat cyclical. He explained that “they’re approved by the Public Utility Commission biannually, so usually you’ll get a March-April increase, and a September decrease.”

Head went on to say that what was really shocking about this increase was how big it truly is. “Look across the board, Encore, they increased 7.3%. KNP, 1.8%. CenterPoint, 28.3 percent!”

Head says, unfortunately, at least in the Houston area, you won’t be able to shop around in order to get that transmission and distribution charge lowered. The only real option that consumers have is to complain to the Public Utility Commission.

Brace yourself.
