{"id":451373,"date":"2026-09-29T19:10:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T19:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/451373\/"},"modified":"2026-09-29T19:10:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T19:10:14","slug":"texas-homeowners-protected-from-being-denied-insurance-based-on-roof-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/451373\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas homeowners protected from being denied insurance based on roof age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdi.texas.gov\/rules\/2026\/documents\/211006proposal.pdf\" itemid=\"7520be32-15cd-436f-891d-89e01e05a1c7\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.skype.com\/HyperLink\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.tdi.texas.gov\/rules\/2026\/documents\/211006proposal.pdf\">clarifying its rule<\/a> that insurance companies can\u2019t decline or not renew a home insurance policy based on the age of a house or its roof.<\/p>\n<p>Under the rule, insurance companies may base decisions on the physical conditions of the home or its components, such as roofing, wiring, heating, air conditioning, plumbing, or siding.<\/p>\n<p>But the rule makes it clear that companies can\u2019t deny or not renew a policy simply because the house or any of these materials are older.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexans deserve fair access to home insurance, no matter the age of their home,\u201d said Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford. \u201cBy strengthening clarity and accountability, we\u2019re building a more transparent insurance market that supports Texans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TDI developed this rule in response to Governor Greg Abbott&#8217;s directive for TDI to\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-directs-tdi-to-take-action-to-make-property-insurance-more-affordable\" itemid=\"5212f89c-1148-44b5-8f27-65cffced40b3\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.skype.com\/HyperLink\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/news\/post\/governor-abbott-directs-tdi-to-take-action-to-make-property-insurance-more-affordable\">support Texas homeowners<\/a>, including prohibiting insurance companies from rejecting policies based solely on the age of a house or its components.
