But Six Flags Over Texas had other plans.

This year’s edition took a hard left turn into territory that made us do a double take: haunts so gross you’ll want a tetanus shot, a murder mystery musical that operates at a frequency Cinemax would recognize and a reptilian carnival that has absolutely no business pitching a tent (figuratively and possibly literally) inside a family theme park.

We had to come back.

Enter Fright Fest’s new mascot

Sign up for the Arts & Culture newsletter to get the latest stories delivered to your inbox

THANK YOU!

You’re all set.

CLOSE

Doc Varnum is what happens when a theme park stops playing it safe and starts listening to what its casting directors have been trying to tell them. Over two years of auditions, the creative team kept seeing unusual skills on hopefuls’ submission sheets: wrestling, professional contortion, things that don’t typically make the approved list at a family park. Instead of ignoring those, they built an entire venue around them. That instinct — lean into the weird rather than sand it down — is what makes this the most revealing new addition at Fright Fest this year.

A gator wrestler on the ropes inside Doc Varnum’s Hybrid Hell Pit.

Preston Barta for Dallas Observer

The result lives inside the old Texas Arena, now an immersive “realm,” called Doc Varnum’s Hybrid Hell Pit, where guests are encouraged to sit and stay in, not just pass through. It’s a hell carnival run by a reptilian Dr. Moreau-like character who apparently skipped the chapter on appropriate workplace conduct: scaly skin, snake eyes and the general vibe of something that should be zoned differently. Live bands cover CKY’s “96 Quite Bitter Beings” while go-go dancers sway to Rob Zombie’s “Superbeast.” Female wrestlers throw each other around a center ring. Contortionists drop into full splits with their backside pointed skyward like a Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman audition that somehow made it past the standards-and-practices department. The whole thing operates at a frequency that is, to put it plainly, charged. The freak-show AI-seeming poster art around the arena earned a firm side-eye from us. Everything else earns stunned, slightly flushed, respect.

‘Wake the Dead’ is a thirsty delight

Over at Southern Palace, “Wake the Dead” is Exhibit A for where Six Flags goes after dark. It’s an in-house-produced murder-mystery musical assembled in just 12 rehearsals, and the park’s leadership described it as a show that could only work at night, once the family-friendly hours were safely behind them. What they were too polite to say outright is that this thing is held together structurally by innuendo.

The show runs 30 minutes, follows a deeply suspicious family with a very dead patriarch, and ends differently every night — because the audience votes and the cast genuinely doesn’t know who the killer is until they do.

The characters are… a lot. The victim’s tortured son performs a Ziggy Stardust-infused take on Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People” — which, given the source material, lands somewhere between emo teenager and daytime soap understudy, and somehow makes complete sense in context. His stepmother, with whom he is very much entangled in ways that would give a therapist a full calendar, tears through a customized “Cell Block Tango,” accounting for the fates of her previous husbands with gleeful efficiency. “Some guys just can’t hold their arsenic,” lands exactly as intended. The family’s bubbly daughter helpfully clarifies that the deceased was not her father, just her daddy — a distinction that earns the disgusted laugh it deserves. Then, the host compares romantic heartbreak to “one great, big sexual smoothie,” sipped through a straw. The audience needed a full beat before the laughter finally caught up.

‘Wake the Dead’ knows exactly what it’s doing when a flapper pulls a long red ribbon out of someone’s waistband.

Preston Barta for Dallas Observer

It’s the clearest sign yet that Six Flags is building something with an actual perspective this time around, and that perspective is currently wearing a negligee and offering you a second round.

“The Spectral Sisters” sideshow back at Crazy Horse Saloon deserves a footnote: think “Hocus Pocus” if the Sanderson sisters had a late-night residency, a working knowledge of the male gaze and absolutely no interest in dialing it back. The men in that room were paying a very different kind of attention, and nobody pretended otherwise.

The haunts, ranked

“Terror at the Polynesian Palm” takes the crown for sheer disgustingness — “Beetlejuice” underworld meets Art the Clown crime scene. The toilet gag deserves its own write-up: there, sitting atop a prop toilet, are several lovingly crafted pieces of fake shit. It’s the kind of thing that looks like someone made a Hobby Lobby run, grabbed some brown paint and went to town with the conviction of a person who has never doubted their calling. Multiple walls throughout look like a diarrhea incident of significant scale was staged, photographed and then re-created in foam and latex for your viewing displeasure. It is, without question, disgusting, while also kind of extraordinary that human beings built all of this by hand, with intention, and then clocked out and carried on with their day.

A taste of the Polynesian Palm’s nasty kitchen.

Preston Barta for Dallas Observer

“The Conjuring Universe” got more interactive this year: a guided tour of cursed artifacts, a room where the walls literally shake during a seance and film-set encounters with notable characters from the franchise, including a contortionist who crawls from under a bed and clicks their joints back into place like a human pop bottle. It’s fun, even if the finale can’t quite top last year’s devil goat launching itself at your face.

“The Strangers: No Escape” stayed immersive but too predictable. “SAW: Legacy of Terror” was forgettable beyond its slick set design. “EverSmile Industries” nailed the retro-future aesthetic but squandered a creepy mannequin room by keeping all of them still.

The scare zones also felt thinner this year — fewer roaming characters, less ambient menace between haunts. When you’re building a sit-down freak carnival from scratch, something has to give, and the scare zones drew the short straw, we guess. Whether that’s the right call probably depends on how long you spent inside Doc Varnum’s pit.

The verdict

Six Flags Over Texas has officially left Bugs Bunny in the rearview mirror. Fright Fest this year is nastier, stranger and carrying considerably more heat than a theme park has any right to. The family-friendly programming still exists for the kids. But if you’re old enough to appreciate a show built around a sexual smoothie metaphor, a reptilian hell carnival and a haunted resort that made us reconsider our entire relationship with hotel bathrooms, this is your moment.

Tickets for Fright Fest run $75 total for park admission plus the haunted attractions pass — the pass itself is a $30 add-on — or $114 if you want the fast pass.
