MHMR is receiving the funding as part of the North Texas Maternal Health Accelerator, a coalition of local universities, hospitals, nonprofits, and other partners.

Leaders and supporters of the Maternal Health Accelerator gathered Tuesday to celebrate the new grant funding at TCU’s medical school campus. The accelerator traces its roots back to 2022, when Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker formed a coalition tasked with improving maternal and infant health in the city.

“When I was elected, I was 37 with a 5-year-old at home, and I thought to myself, if the sacrifice is going to make sense for my family, this has to look different in leadership,” Parker said, tearing up.

Parker brought together leaders from the Fort Worth region to begin tackling the issue of maternal mortality. The U.S. has the worst maternal death rate of any high-income nation. The problem is particularly acute for Black mothers, who die at a rate of nearly three times that of white women, according to the Commonwealth Fund. In Texas, there were about 28 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births between 2018 and 2022, compared to 23 deaths per 100,000 births nationally.

The Maternal Health Accelerator, officially convened last year, is working to reduce severe obstetric complications by more than 20% over three years. One of the accelerator’s first major initiatives has focused on reducing the need for blood transfusions in pregnant and postpartum moms. The group has begun distributing free, over-the-counter iron pills to moms across North Texas. The accelerator estimates that more than 27,000 iron supplements have been distributed across Dallas and Tarrant counties as of June 2026.

The accelerator has also debuted a maternal health dashboard, which illustrates the Dallas and Tarrant neighborhoods that are most vulnerable to poor maternal health outcomes.

The $4 million in state funding, which will be distributed over two years, will primarily go toward expanding MHMR’s Help Me Grow program, said MHMR CEO Susan Garnett. Help Me Grow in a platform that connects expecting and new parents with resources to help them with anything from mental health needs to substance use disorders.

The new state funding was made available during the 2024 legislative session, and was the result of quiet lobbying by delegates from the Maternal Health Accelerator, Parker said. During the upcoming legislative session, Parker and her colleagues want to keep the momentum going. To date, the Maternal Health Accelerator has been primarily funded by philanthropy, but these initiatives need public funding to continue their work, she said.

“We’ve raised over 25 million dollars here locally just for North Texas. That’s phenomenal,” Parker said. “But ask yourself, could you replicate that successfully across all of Texas and the United States? The answer is no.”

Parker said she and her colleagues will be lobbying to make this funding source larger during the next legislative session, so initiatives the accelerator has worked on can spread to other parts of the state.

A Fort Worth initiative working to save mothers and babies from severe pregnancy complications was awarded a $4…

[10
23399,116,118,117,9856,19837,3764,155320,430,7908,122
post-451809","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fort-worth","tag-accelerator","tag-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth-headlines","tag-fort-worth-news","tag-maternal-health","tag-maternal-mortality","tag-mattie-parker","tag-mhmr","tag-north-texas","tag-state-funding","tag-tarrant-county
["GET
