{"id":451815,"date":"2026-09-30T05:06:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T05:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/451815\/"},"modified":"2026-09-30T05:06:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T05:06:10","slug":"landlord-serving-eviction-papers-beaten-with-bat-investigators-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/451815\/","title":{"rendered":"Landlord serving eviction papers beaten with bat, investigators say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">HUFFMAN, Texas (KTRK) &#8212; When a landlord went to serve eviction papers last week, the Harris County Sheriff&#8217;s Office said he was confronted with a gun and a bat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">It happened Sept. 21 on Darden Drive in Huffman, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Investigators say 42-year-old James Jackson pointed a gun at the landlord and hit him over the head with the bat, leaving a bloody gash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">It&#8217;s the latest case of tenant-on-landlord violence to hit the headlines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Earlier this month, police say two leasing office employees were gunned down by a tenant at a west Houston apartment complex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">RELATED: <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/post\/man-charged-capital-murder-killing-2-apartment-complex-employees-leasing-office-docs\/19795529\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tenant charged with capital murder for killing 2 apartment complex employees in leasing office: Docs<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Prosecutors say he&#8217;d been arguing with them about the terms of his lease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;She&#8217;s over there giving people eviction letters. People get triggered,&#8221; Sabrina Salinas, granddaughter of one of the victims, told Eyewitness News days later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Justin Singer knows that only too well. He&#8217;s been renting out properties for over a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;Fortunately, we haven&#8217;t had a ton that have gone over the edge, but you only need a handful to, like, you know, shake you up,&#8221; Singer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Once while accompanying law enforcement to evict a tenant, he said police had to pull a gun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;They were belligerent with the police officer there escorting. The police officer had to draw a weapon in order to actually gain entry and calm this guy down,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Attorney Brian Cweren is encouraging landlords to take advantage of a new law which expands the ways you can serve a notice to vacate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For the first time, the list now includes email; however, there is a catch, Cweren explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">&#8220;If a landlord wants to have an email or electronic communication, the tenant has to have consented to it,&#8221; Cweren said. &#8220;If there&#8217;s not some type of consent language, then they can&#8217;t serve an email notice to vacate.&#8221;<br class=\" \"\/><\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2026 KTRK-TV.
