While it’s not officially a rivalry, there is budding tension between the programs… over space.

UCF, founded in the 1960s to assist the growing United States space program, has branded itself as Space U and hosts an annual Space Game. Meanwhile, Houston is the home of mission control and spoiled UCF’s 8-0 Space Game record last November.

Launch is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET in Houston in the first meeting between the programs at TDECU Stadium in 2020. This is the fifth consecutive season UCF sports a 3-1 record after four games. The program regularly takes care of business in non-conference play, and this year, Scott Frost led his Knights to a 1-0 conference record after upsetting TCU in Orlando.

The Knights overcame plenty of adversity in the Big 12 opener against the Horned Frogs. Starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III remains out from a hamstring injury suffered in the Week 2 loss to Pitt. Wide receivers Jonathan Bibbs and Duane Thomas Jr. and star linebacker Lewis Carter were among others who missed the TCU game. Still, UCF found a way.

Keyone Jenkins will make his third-straight start Saturday in Houston. The former FIU starter is 2-0 since taking the reins from Barnett, and his Week 4 performance against TCU was everything the Knights could ask for. It wasn’t flashy or explosive, but Jenkins finished 19-of-20 for 160 yards and a touchdown — keeping the offense moving and refraining from an interception. He did lose two fumbles, however, but UCF’s defense returned the favor by upending TCU 4-2 in the turnover battle.

Offensively, the Knights’ lifeblood is their run game. UCF owns the 15th-best rushing average in the country at 5.94 yards per attempt, and only six teams have more rushing touchdowns than the Knights. Jenkins can be mobile, but this run game is a primarily running back-led operation. Duke Watson owns the second-highest rushing average in the FBS (8.9 yards per attempt) among ball carriers with at least 40 reps. The Louisville transfer is known for his breakaway speed, delivering two 60+ yard touchdowns through four weeks. Taevion Swint has been an effective second fiddle, and the redshirt freshman has burst onto the scene with 129 yards and three touchdowns on a 6.1 average.

The Knights require more production in their shorthanded receiver room. Josh Derry and Waden Charles tie for the team lead with 10 receptions, and no Knight is averaging as many as 30 receiving yards per game. UCF uses a fair amount of heavy personnel looks on offense, and tight ends Caden Piening and Dylan Wade are among the most utilized receivers, combining for 12 catches and 113 yards.

UCF’s more consistent unit this year is the defense. Both Pitt and TCU managed only one touchdown against Alex Grinch’s unit, and those two opponents combined for just 25 points.

However, the Knights must operate without Lewis Carter for the second-straight week. Still, UCF enjoyed strong linebacker play last week against TCU. Tackett Curtis led the charge as the defense held the Horned Frogs to 33 rushing yards on 27 attempts. Curtis ranks atop the team in tackles (28), along with having a sack and interception.

Speaking of sacks, the Knights landed four on the Horned Frogs. Isaiah Nixon has been the premier pass rusher with 2.5 sacks, filling in the vacancy left behind by first-round NFL Draft pick Malachi Lawrence. The pass rush and coverage work together exceptionally, and UCF’s defense has six interceptions, compared to just three passing touchdowns allowed. Strong safety Demari Henderson has particularly excelled, compiling 19 tackles, two interceptions, and two pass breakups as a returning starter in a veteran secondary.

<img alt="HOUSTON, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 05: Conner Weigman #1 of the Houston Cougars celebrates his touchdown with Patrick Overmyer #9 of the Houston Cougars during the fourth quarter against the Oregon State Beavers at TDECU Stadium on September 05, 2026 in Houston, Texas. The Cougars fell inches short of tying the reigning conference champion in the final minute of regulation, and they return home for the first time since that matchup, hoping to capture their first win in the Big 12 standings.

Houston finished 10-3 last season, but it’s evident the Cougars’ offense has taken a giant leap forward in 2026. The Cougars are coming off a near-perfect outing against Georgia Southern where they had seven full possessions and scored touchdowns on each of the first six. Houston is currently ninth in scoring offense (44.5 points per game), 11th in total offense, seventh in passer rating, 12th in rushing offense, and first in third down conversion rate (71.1 percent).

Conner Weigman has improved with experience in Slade Nagle’s offensive system. The veteran quarterback has 11 touchdown passes to one interception, operating with greater efficiency (71.4 completion percentage) and better explosiveness compared to last year. Weigman’s rushing production has significantly dwindled, however, but that’s partially by design.

Houston is leaning more on the running backs for now, and that strategy has worked. Makhi Hughes has 282 rushing yards this season, while Re’Shaun Sanford II sits right behind with 252. The backs both average at least 5.0 yards per carry and combine for four rushing touchdowns on the year. They’re supported by a stout offensive line led by two-time First Team All-American Conference guard Shadre Hurst, who has been a perfect transfer portal addition from Tulane.

The Cougars’ receiving corps is also deeper this year. First Team All-Big 12 wide receiver Amare Thomas, who posted 103 yards and a touchdown at UCF last year, remains as lethal as any receiver in the conference. But this year, he has more support from the rest of the room. Koby Young has molded into an established deep threat with four touchdowns and an average of 24.4 yards per catch. Oregon State transfer Trent Walker finally got involved last week, and tight end Patrick Overmyer (19 receptions, 241 yards) has been a reliable downfield threat all season.

Defensively, Houston needs to prove it can revert to its 2025 standard. The Cougars haven’t contained the air nearly as well this fall, surrendering 262 passing yards per game — checking in at 10th-to-last in the FBS. Oregon State, Texas Tech, and Georgia Southern all succeeded with intermediate to deep throws on the Cougars’ secondary, and the tackling and coverage must improve for Houston to contend for the Big 12.

Still, the secondary makes plays when needed. Strong safety Jordan Allen ranks atop the Big 12 with six pass breakups, and nickel Javion White has four deflections, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks as a frequent blitzer. Turning deflections into turnovers is the next progression the unit must take, as the Cougars finished two of their three outings against FBS competition without a single interception.

For what Houston has lacked in its aerial defense, it has more than made up for in other areas. The Cougars are sixth in the FBS in stopping the run, allowing just 63.5 rushing yards per game and 2.4 yards per carry. The additions of transfers Jaden Yates (Ole Miss) and Ashton Porter (Oregon) have made all the difference up front. Houston has only yielded two 20-yard rushes and zero 30-yard rushes through four games.

Houston enters this matchup with a significant offensive edge. Conneer Weigman and the well-rounded Cougar offense haven’t faced much resistance this year, and crossing the 400-yard threshold has been a layup. UCF will present a challenge — just like it slowed down an explosive Pitt offense — but Houston’s foundation up front and versatility in play-calling should be able to prevail.

UCF’s offensive strength of running the football doesn’t align with Houston’s glaring weakness on the back end. The Knights have yet to show explosiveness through the air since Alonza Barnett III went down, making this a favorable matchup for Houston.

The Cougars bounce back and claim their first Big 12 win of 2026, starting October strong with a comfortable victory over UCF.

Prediction: Houston 34, UCF 14

Time and date: Saturday, October 3 at 12:00 p.m. ETNetwork: ESPN2Location: TDECU Stadium — Houston, TXSpread: Houston (-12.5)Over/under:…

[7
315,56,58,57,19422
post-452163","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-houston","tag-big-12","tag-houston","tag-houston-headlines","tag-houston-news","tag-ucf
["GET
