P\u00e9rez | KUT News)<\/p>\n<p>Controversial Twitch streamer and self-described socialist Hasan Piker is set to speak at UT Austin Wednesday at an event hosted by UT\u2019s University Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>The event was nearly derailed after organizers say they received more than 3,000 RSVPs, leaving them scrambling for weeks to find a larger venue. The capacity of the William C. Powers, Jr. Student Activity Center, where Piker is slated to speak, is around 460.<\/p>\n<p>Adit Raha, president of the University Democrats, said UT didn\u2019t accommodate requests to host Piker at a larger on-campus space like the Union Ballroom or Gregory Gym.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted a more secure venue than the one we were given, or that we got,\u201d he said. \u201cAt each kind of attempt, we were hit with a mysterious and sometimes questionable roadblock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raha also criticized the University of Texas Police Department for charging University Democrats $20,000 for providing event security, despite its relatively small footprint.<\/p>\n<p>UT and UTPD did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Piker\u2019s appearance has been decried by state lawmakers, including Gov. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jewishinsider.com\/2026\/09\/hasan-piker-invitation-university-of-texas-college-dems\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Greg Abbott<\/a>, who said the student group was platforming Piker\u2019s \u201cdisgusting rhetoric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the event, Jewish group Texas Hillel said the influencer\u2019s harsh criticism of Israel\u2019s war in Gaza is antisemitic. Rabbi Stephanie Max, executive director of Texas Hillel, said Piker\u2019s views \u201cgo against our values as Americans and Jews, and his hateful, antisemitic rhetoric is repulsive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Right-leaning student groups <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedailytexan.com\/2026\/09\/18\/student-organizations-decision-to-host-hasan-piker-sparks-discourse\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told the Daily Texan<\/a> they plan on protesting the event.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-hasan-piker-venue-dispute-22453878.php\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Piker told<\/a> the Austin American-Statesman that he thinks his views on Israel are \u201cvery close to many in the student body\u201d and that pushback against his appearance was \u201cdisappointing but not unexpected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raha criticized the university for, as he sees it, obstructing Piker\u2019s appearance while welcoming far-right influencer Ben Shapiro at a larger venue next week.
