The Aggies have gotten off to a disastrous start in SEC play. There\u2019s no way to sugarcoat it. Texas A&M fell to LSU 35-6 last week in an absolute mollywhopping that left Mike Elko\u2019s squad in desperation mode for the foreseeable future. Texas A&M will hope to get back in the win column against an Arkansas squad expected to finish near the bottom of the SEC. This contest has become a must-win game to right the ship. Let\u2019s talk about what needs to happen in the trenches for Texas A&M to finally get in the win column in conference play.<\/p>\n
Texas A&M\u2019s offensive performance in 2026 has been abysmal. The Aggies haven\u2019t been able to get anything going in the passing attack. Not all of that falls on the offensive line, but they still allowed four sacks against LSU, a number that cannot persist. Still, I did see some decent blocking at times in the run game, even if it is woefully inconsistent. I think leaning on the run game has to be the game plan moving forward, and certainly this week against an Arkansas rushing attack near the bottom of the SEC.<\/p>\n
Some of the pulling concepts that A&M found success with should be beneficial here against Arkansas. My honest opinion is that the Aggies need to severely limit the number of drop-back attempts Marcel Reed has. Hand the ball off to Owens, Morrow, Edwards, or Baker. Draw up designed runs for Reed. Keep the ball out of the air and limit the amount of protecting Reed the offensive line has to do. I genuinely believe if Marcel Reed has to throw the ball more than 20 times in this contest, Texas A&M is in trouble. Lean on the big fellas. Arkansas doesn\u2019t have a defensive line that will hold up against a sustained ground attack. Even if the success isn\u2019t there early on, stick with the plan.<\/p>\n
The eye discipline of the secondary represents a massive issue for this Texas A&M defense, but equally distressing is the lack of a pass rush for an Aggie front that was expected to be a big factor for Texas A&M this year. The Aggies are at the bottom of the SEC in sacks. This is a Mike Elko defense that has thrived on being disruptive, and that disruption has simply evaporated. The unit has fared slightly better against the run game, but still gets displaced at times, something that simply can\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n
The good news? This Arkansas offensive line is likely the worst unit Texas A&M has faced since Missouri State in week one. The Hogs rank at the bottom of the SEC in both sacks allowed and rushing offense. I\u2019m not expecting a miraculous turnaround overnight. However, if Texas A&M can\u2019t find success in the trenches against this offensive line, the Aggies are in huge trouble moving forward. KJ Jackson is going to have success at times throwing the ball, but Texas A&M absolutely has to take advantage of this Arkansas offensive line and force turnovers.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, I do think Texas A&M gets back in the win column this week thanks in large part to being better than Arkansas up front. However, this is not going to be a fun viewing experience for the 12th Man.
