That’s where we have continued signals of seeing some bigger six inch or higher rainfall totals, but it’s possible generally anywhere in central Texas,” said CBS Austin meteorologist Avery Tomasco.

RELATED | Heaviest rain, biggest flood threat expected Thursday night in Central Texas

“It is a complicated forecast, and there’s going to be some twists and turns all the way up to the final moments that even when storms are on radar, we may not have a full handle of how this is going to evolve,” he said.

What safety plans are in place for ACL?

The CIty of Austin hosted a news conference to discuss safety at ACL and other festivities around the city this fall.

David Wiechmann, Public Information and Marketing Program Manager at Austin Emergency Management, said the city is monitoring the weather situation closely.

The city is also working with C3 Presents, the company that produces ACL, on safety plans.

ALSO | ACL pedicab drivers prepare to ride through a potentially stormy weekend

However, Wiechmann says the threshold for any cancellations or evacuations during the festival is situation-dependent and, ultimately, C3’s decision.

“The City of Austin has an all-hazards protective action plan that includes evacuations. C3 also has their own emergency plans. Austin Emergency Management reviews their plans,” said Wiechmann. “So we would work with C3 and our other public safety agencies that are there on-site and at the venue in order to organize and execute any type of evacuation if it’s needed and deemed by C3.”

According to Wiechmann, C3 was invited to attend today’s conference, but was unavailable.

“We did anticipate potential questions, and we asked them if they were able to be here today, and they’re not,” said Wiechmann.

CBS Austin reached out to C3 with questions regarding its weather safety plans for ACL, including the threshold for cancellations, plans for evacuations and what coordination with the City of Austin has looked like.

ACL Fest organizers provided the following statement:

“Safety guides all decision making at Austin City Limits Music Festival. It is our number one priority and a year-round focus. We work closely with our partners at the City of Austin to continually evaluate our plans to ensure the safety of everyone in the park.We are monitoring the weather forecast closely and have contingencies for all scenarios. We look forward to another great weekend in Zilker Park and we will provide further updates as necessary.ACL Fest fans can stay informed this week and during the festival by following official ACL Fest social media channels, signing up for SMS notifications by texting ACL to 64934, and turning on push notifications via the ACL Fest Festiverse App presented by Miller Lite.”Could ACL see another ‘Mud Fest’?

Rain created sludgy mud on Zilker Park’s Great Lawn during ACL in 2009, which has been deemed ‘Mud Fest.’

The grass at Zilker has historically been treated with Dillo Dirt, a compostable product made by Austin Water that contains treated sewer sludge.

The biosolids in Dillo Dirt include treated human waste. However, Dillo Dirt is safe and “meets all EPA and TCEQ requirements for unrestricted use,” according to Austin Water.

However, a repeat of mud fest looks unlikely.

“The 2009 mud fest was really because of the renovations that happened before ACL 2009. They put down a fresh layer of dirt and then sod on top of it and just a little bit of rain—I think it was about an inch that weekend—caused all that dirt to come up through the grass and become a mud pit with all the foot traffic that was going around,” said Tomasco. “So for that reason, even if we get multiple inches of rain ahead of ACL this year, we probably won’t see a repeat of that mud fest because the grass has been there a long time.”

AUSTIN, Texas — Heavy rain is headed for Central Texas along with the potential for flooding, but for…

[11
132,134,133
post-452697","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news
["GET
