The Astros were eliminated Wednesday in the wild-card round by the White Sox, who concluded a sweep of the best-of-three series with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/astros\/article\/astros-joe-espada-future-al-wild-card-loss-22423855.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">a 7-3 win at Daikin Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, Espada said he had not been told anything about his status but that he expected to \u201chave a conversation\u201d with Astros owner Jim Crane \u201cin the next day or two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJim has been very clear about his process and when he wants to have that conversation,\u201d Espada said. \u201cI respect the process and how blessed I\u2019ve been to be here for over nine years and experience so many division titles, championship series, World Series, winning one. As a bench coach, as a manager, I have witnessed so many great moments. So obviously, I would like to continue enjoying those moments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 24, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/astros\/article\/dana-brown-fired-gm-general-manager-22400825.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Crane dismissed general manager Dana Brown<\/a>, who like Espada was in his final year under contract. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/texas-sports-nation\/astros\/article\/joe-espada-astros-manager-dana-brown-18487999.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Brown promoted Espada from bench coach<\/a>, a role he held <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/texas-sports-nation\/astros\/article\/houston-astros-joe-espada-new-manager-bio-history-18487933.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">for six seasons for Houston<\/a>, to the manager job after the 2023 season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/astros\/article\/manager-joe-espada-future-22402440.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Crane said in August<\/a> that Espada would remain manager for the rest of the season and the team would decide on his future \u201cat the end of the season.\u201d At the time, Crane stated that his \u201cexpectation\u201d was for the Astros to win the American League West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Houston did that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/astros\/article\/houston-clinches-al-west-title-22451507.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">albeit with an 81-81 record<\/a> in a division where no other team finished above .500. It was the fourth straight season the Astros posted a declining win total. They have not won a postseason game since 2023, swept in two wild-card series since then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/astros\/article\/houston-detroit-tigers-score-wild-card-19810286.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">by the Tigers<\/a> and White Sox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed up every day wanting to win,\u201d second baseman Jose Altuve said of Espada on Wednesday night. \u201cI think he did everything he could to keep us there to keep winning \u2026 This is a team, we all work together. I think we\u2019re all sad. The Astros\u2019 pitching staff had the seventh-highest ERA in the majors, their outfielders ranked 29th of 30 teams in OPS and they started 19 different pitchers, a franchise record. They won the AL West for the eighth time in 10 seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Whether that will keep Espada in his role is unclear. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/article\/astros-owner-jim-crane-says-team-s-playoff-berth-22453599.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Crane told the Associated Press this week<\/a> that the Astros making the playoffs \u201cwould be something to consider\u201d when deciding on Espada\u2019s future. But a two-game sweep by the White Sox put an abrupt end to their hopes of a run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoe was great for us,\u201d shortstop Jeremy Pe\u00f1a said. \u201cJoe is a stand-up guy, stand-up man. He shows up every single day, he wants to win, he works hard. And I think he did everything in his power to be the best version of himself, be the best manager for his players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Astros have finished with 88, 87 and 81 wins in their three seasons under Espada. The franchise\u2019s streak of eight straight playoff appearances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/astros\/article\/houston-eliminated-playoff-contention-21070763.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">ended in 2025<\/a>, when they finished one win shy of a berth. They started 20-31 this season but recovered to clinch the AL West on the season\u2019s final day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor myself, I know that Joe was with us every step of the way and he was going to do everything he could to put us in the best position to succeed,\u201d starter Hunter Brown said. \u201cI think that\u2019s exactly what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Espada on Wednesday night dismissed the notion that it was difficult to manage this season without clarity about his future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it\u2019s part of the job,\u201d Espada said. \u201cYou\u2019ve still got to win on the baseball field and deliver what the expectations are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After pushing to secure a playoff spot for the season\u2019s final two weeks, the\u00a0Astros never led in the two wild-card games against the White Sox. They fell behind 3-0 after two innings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/astros\/article\/houston-chicago-white-sox-score-al-wild-card-22385102.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">in Game 1<\/a>, when both teams ran bullpen games, and trailed 4-0 in the first inning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/astros\/article\/houston-chicago-white-sox-score-game-2-22455855.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">of Game 2<\/a>, a deficit they never erased. The end of their season came with uncertainty about their manager\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been blessed,\u201d Espada said. \u201cI\u2019ve been here for a long time. And I\u2019ve been in a few piles, I\u2019ve been soaked in Champagne. I have created some really great relationships. I have witnessed some Hall of Fame players that I\u2019ve coached and I\u2019ve \u2026 been part of some really special years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s every coach, every manager\u2019s dream is just to be able to coach and lead players like this in an organization that gives you the opportunity to always get the best players so you can consistently win divisions and go to the World Series.
