However, the main focus with this particular front won’t be changing temperatures. Instead, it will be the threat of heavy rainfall and flash flooding across the region.

The entire region is under a flood watch, which will stay in effect until 7 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service said. A widespread inch to 4 inches of rainfall is expected across the watch area, but a few isolated spots could see up to 8 inches of rain.

Article continues below this ad

The first, and likely most significant, round of heavy rainfall is expected late Thursday morning into the early afternoon. However, a second round of rain will be possible late Thursday night and into Friday. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect.

Shown are the expected rainfall totals across South Texas through Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS Austin/San Antonio

Flood threat Thursday

During the predawn hours – mainly between 2 and 7 a.m. Thursday – a few scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop across South-Central Texas, including in the Hill Country and Interstate-35 corridor. Overall rain chances at this time will be near 30% to 50%.

Article continues below this ad

By sunrise, a line of strong thunderstorms is expected to push through the Hill Country, moving southeast through the mid-morning hours. This line will be moving slowly and could produce heavy rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour at times, resulting in possible flash flooding.

The line of storms is likely to progress into the San Antonio area by the late morning to early afternoon. The exact timing for the onset for heavy rainfall is still uncertain, but San Antonio’s greatest chance of storms will occur between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday.

The strongest storm activity also might be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, small hail, and frequent lightning – potentially resulting in power outages for parts of San Antonio and the surrounding area. An isolated tornado is also not out of the question, but the overall tornado threat is very low.

Forecast models do show a break in the activity expected by Thursday evening, especially between 6 and 9 p.m. During this time, temperatures will likely hover in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Article continues below this ad

Second round of storms?

With low atmospheric moisture still in place along with a stalled-out cold front, forecast models do show the potential for storm redevelopment late Thursday night – mainly after 9 to 10 p.m. Off-and-on storms may continue into early Friday, potentially causing flooding concerns during the Friday morning commute.

However, this second round of storms does come with more uncertainty. If the cold front progresses farther away from San Antonio than expected, rain chances early Friday would be significantly lower. But a closer cold front would allow for higher rain chances and another flood threat.

Rain chances will start to fall by Friday afternoon and evening. Still, about a 50% chance of a few lingering showers will remain across South Texas. Temperatures are expected to be slightly below average, with highs expected to top out in the low 80s.

Article continues below this ad

Weekend forecast

Scattered rainfall is likely to continue this weekend, as the cold front continues to sit over the region. On Saturday, San Antonio will have about a 50% chance of rain, followed by a 30% chance of rain by Sunday. The flood threat, though, will decrease significantly, as most rainfall will be light.

Article continues below this ad

Temperatures this weekend are expected to be comfortable, with afternoons in the lower 80s and mornings likely to hover near 70 degrees. By next week, daytime temps are likely to warm back into the mid-80s, with cool morning temps falling into the mid- to upper 60s.

Shown is the future radar across South Central Texas at 3 p.m. Thursday, as a line of strong…

[6
27,29,28
post-453057","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-texas","tag-texas","tag-texas-headlines","tag-texas-news
["GET
