More than 300 Flock license plate-reading cameras<\/a> at risk of going dark in Dallas will instead remain online for at least another 90 days under an agreement between police and the surveillance technology company.<\/p>\n

The exact terms of the extension were not disclosed Wednesday. Department spokesperson Allison Hudson said details were being worked out and it was not immediately known whether police would need to pay for the continued service.<\/p>\n

Police Chief Daniel Comeaux and Flock Safety CEO Garrett Langley met<\/a> Wednesday morning to discuss concerns about the technology, safeguards designed to identify potential misuse and accountability requirements.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology can be an important tool in keeping Dallas safe, but we also have a responsibility to understand how that technology and the information it collects are being used and protected,\u201d\u00a0Comeaux said in a statement announcing the 90-day extension. \u201cToday\u2019s conversation allowed us to address our concerns directly and better understand the safeguards Flock has in place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dallas police operate a network<\/a> of nearly 700 Flock cameras. After\u00a0Gov. Greg Abbott paused<\/a> state funding for the technology in late August, the department said nearly half could go offline.<\/p>\n

Langley said that Dallas police are an important partner and that Flock appreciated the opportunity to meet with Comeaux and continue working with the department.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re proud of the impact our technology has had in helping Dallas PD solve crimes, locate missing people, and keep the community safe,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The department also shared a photo online showing\u00a0Comeaux, Langley and other police officials posing together at a restaurant.<\/p>\n

The technology has drawn calls for tighter safeguards from lawmakers and privacy advocates across the political spectrum, with the Atlanta-based company saying it also would support legislation establishing guardrails for the technology. North Texas lawmakers at both the state and federal levels have proposed new restrictions on its use.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Law enforcement officials describe the cameras as a valuable investigative tool. Dallas police officials have repeatedly defended their use, and a majority of the City Council rejected<\/a> an earlier proposal to cut funding for the system.<\/p>\n

A handful of protesters<\/a> and some members on the city\u2019s community police oversight board gathered outside the police headquarters, timing their demonstration with Langley\u2019s visit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Wednesday meeting follows another discussion Comeaux had with a technology executive earlier this week.
