Once they get inside, they continue to grow, potentially causing recurring clogs, leaks and other costly problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Master plumber Robert Koster of <a rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.missionac.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.missionac.com\/\">Mission AC &amp; Plumbing<\/a> has seen it firsthand. In one River Oaks home, he says a root grew about 12 feet long inside a sewer line. Plumbers jokingly called it a \u201cpoop root\u201d because of where it was growing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">You can hear the story and see a photo of the unusual root in the full interview above. Robert also brought a section of an older cast-iron pipe to the Houston Life studio to explain how pipes can deteriorate over time.<\/p>\n<p>Signs of a plumbing problem<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Koster says homeowners should pay attention to changes around the house and in the yard. Some potential warning signs include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Older cast-iron pipes can also be a concern. Koster says they generally have a lifespan of about 45 to 60 years, although factors such as what goes down the drain can affect their condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">He also recommends being careful about what you flush.
