His debut record with The Wartime Limousine arrives on Oct. 30.

As a teen in Bedford, Texas, Michael Lee would slip out his bedroom window, push his car down the driveway in neutral to not wake his parents, then drive 45 minutes east to Harry Hines Boulevard in Dallas to catch live blues shows.

That kid grew up, but the obsession never loosened its grip. On Oct. 30, that love arrives fully formed as the self-titled debut from Michael Lee & The Wartime Limousine, a Fort Worth soul and blues band that sounds like it wandered in from a warmer, richer decade and decided to stay there.

A young love

Most kids are introduced to music through cartoons and jingles. Michael met it through a toy guitar and grainy concert footage at age four. While his classmates were parked in front of “Sesame Street,” he was studying live tapes with the focus of a grad student.

“It was so weird when you get to school and nobody else has heard of those people,” he says.

Sign up for the Music newsletter to get the latest stories delivered to your inbox

THANK YOU!

You’re all set.

CLOSE

Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Otis Redding, the whole Stax and Motown catalog absorbed through his grandparents’ country records and his own relentless digging. He wasn’t collecting influences for a cool résumé; he was simply enthralled.

“I had to play music, man, I was obsessed,” he says. “Like, it was all I thought about all day, all through school, just nonstop.”

The North Texas education earned after midnight

More than rebellion, those late-night runs to Dallas were tuition. Lee soaked up the scene at the Hole in the Wall on Harry Hines, the blues jam at Nate’s Seafood & Steakhouse, Fort Worth’s J&J’s Blues Bar and the Keys Lounge, and Spencer’s Corner Bar. These were rooms where local giants like Lucky Peterson held court and where a young player could stand close enough to pocket every trick worth knowing.

He learned showmanship the hard way from people who didn’t hand out compliments lightly. One mentor, Joe Jonas (no, not that one), delivered a lesson Michael still repeats word for word: “Son, when you play like that, all the men pay attention. You play nice and pretty, all the women pay attention. Now I’m gonna count this back off and I want to know which one you want.”

That’s the kind of schooling no conservatory offers. It taught intention. It taught that a note is a choice, not an accident.

The broader region became its own classroom, too. This is the same North Texas soil that produced Leon Bridges and the Quaker City Nighthawks, that gave players like Josh Weathers a stage to grow on. Michael credits that community with pointing him toward his truest self.

“It was just being around a group of folks that were passionate about music and what was true to them,” he says. “And I think that really kind of shaped that direction.”

In conversation with the greats

Now, all that late-night devotion has manifested as an album that is a debut on paper, but feels more like a rediscovered classic.

The record was cut live to tape with vintage gear at Fort Worth’s Niles City Sound, and breathes the way old soul records breathe. You can hear the room. You can hear a band playing to each other in real time. The result sits comfortably in conversation with Stevie Wonder’s warmth, Al Green’s seduction and Marvin Gaye’s aching honesty. It’s funky where it wants to move you, jazzy where it wants to surprise you and timeless throughout.

The range is the real revelation. On one end you have the slow-dance-in-the-kitchen tenderness of “You and I” and “I Am Yours,” the kind of songs built for two people swaying on the linoleum long after the kids have gone to bed. Michael’s falsetto floats through these moments so gently that you almost forget the same voice can roar.

Then the mood shifts. “Outta My Head” and “Starlight Serenade” are groove machines, the sort that stop you mid-sentence and set your head bobbing before you’ve decided to let them. The band layers in flourish after flourish, from Hammond B-3 swells to pedal steel that quietly reminds you where this music was born.

And then there’s “Drowning,” the album’s already-available single and its rawest confession. Here Michael trades charm for reckoning, singing about facing your own wreckage with nobody coming to save you. His voice climbs from a weary murmur to a full-throated blues growl, the passion earned rather than performed. It’s proof that this old soul understands restraint as deeply as release, knowing exactly when to whisper and when to soar.

Catching the next ride

Michael Lee & The Wartime Limousine arrives Oct. 30, and it deserves your full attention. Start with “Drowning” to feel the weight of what this band can summon, then follow it with “I Am Yours,” the new single that dropped Oct. 1 — and when release day comes, clear your calendar and let the whole record wash over you.

The teenager who once pushed his car down a driveway in the dark took a real risk chasing this sound. Decades later, that risk has become a gift.
