\n President Donald Trump jokingly described Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton as \u201ca pain in the ass\u201d during remarks in Denton, Texas, on Thursday \u2013 the latest in a long line of jabs he has made about his staunch ally who is running in a critical race for the GOP.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump praised Paxton\u2019s loyalty, saying that when he had faced criticism in the past, Paxton was \u201cat my side more than anybody.\u201d Then he quipped, \u201cAnd I have to always remember that because he could be a pain in the ass sometimes. I\u2019ll be honest.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump has repeatedly insulted Paxton<\/a> in public remarks, even though he endorsed Paxton over a safer candidate in the Republican primary and has generally sought to boost his campaign. He has poked fun at the way the Texas attorney general dresses and talks, including at the GOP\u2019s midterm convention, which was held in Paxton\u2019s home state and focused heavily on him and his race.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cSome may not like the way he dresses,\u201d Trump said, adding: \u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Paxton has not in any way bit back \u2013 and Trump\u2019s insults are often accompanied by praise for how Paxton does his job. But The New York Times on Wednesday published audio<\/a> of Paxton privately complaining to conservative donors and lobbyists that the convention did more harm than good.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cSo, to be honest with you, the numbers \u2013 when we did that convention \u2013 it dropped our numbers,\u201d the Texas attorney general said. \u201cEverybody\u2019s numbers dropped. Right now, yeah, not good.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Pressed earlier Thursday by CNN\u2019s Kristen Holmes on if he had spoken to Paxton following that leaked audio, Trump said, \u201cNo, I haven\u2019t.\u201d When reporters asked about the audio Wednesday afternoon during an Oval Office event, he said he hadn\u2019t heard it.\n <\/p>\n
