Deputies allege that a driver, Jeremy Porter, fired multiple gunshots at a car driven by Monica Hicks, killing her 5-year-old daughter, Zah’Layah Walton. Porter was charged with capital murder.

“I asked God why He’d take my baby instead of me,” Hicks said at a balloon release held two days later. “He took my baby away from me for nothing.”

Hicks said she had never seen or interacted with Porter before the shooting.

“He acknowledged that he fired gunshots at another vehicle. Whether this was the intended target or not will be something that will have to be sorted out in court,” said Jason Spencer, a spokesperson for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Spencer said the sheriff’s office often charges road rage shooters with aggravated assault and, if someone dies, potentially murder.

“When an incident occurs that’s commonly known as road rage, what we’re really talking about is someone committing violence against another driver while out on the roadways,” he said, adding that congested roads and traffic help drive the behavior.

An analysis by the nonprofit news organization The Trace shows Texas had 604 road rage shootings over an 11-year period from 2014 through 2024, killing 172 people. Of those shootings, 267 were in the Houston area, killing 76 people. The data ranked Texas and Houston as the top state and metro area in the country, respectively, for roadway shootings.

“We’re constantly analyzing traffic, crash data, other dangerous driving data to try to identify the hot spots,” Spencer said.

He said the sheriff’s office concentrates its patrols in those hot spots and uses automated license plate readers.

“We were able to use information from those license plate readers to relatively quickly identify a possible suspect,” Spencer said of Zah’Layah’s case.

A Texas law passed in 2025 makes certain road rage shootings first-degree felonies punishable by up to 99 years or life in prison.

“When word starts to get out that if you commit a crime on Harris County roads, it’s a high likelihood that you’re going to be found, it’s our hope that that will translate into fewer acts of violence,” Spencer said.

For Zah’Layah’s family, the balloon release represented a life senselessly taken too soon, a demand for justice and a call for peace.

“I am thankful that as many people came out, as many people came and showed up for my people, and that as many people are advocating for her as if they knew her,” Hicks said.

TEXAS — Road rage shootings are on the rise across the country, according to data ranking Texas as…

[7
1061,132,1570,102,138,56,58,57,223,1225,82,27,1569,5239,272,15717,835
post-454401","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-houston","tag-app-public-safety","tag-austin","tag-ctv","tag-dallas","tag-el-paso","tag-houston","tag-houston-headlines","tag-houston-news","tag-news","tag-public-safety","tag-san-antonio","tag-texas","tag-texas-what-you-need-to-know","tag-topic-latest-public-safety-crime-stories","tag-traffic","tag-valencia-jones","tag-vod
["GET
