In a social media update<\/a> shared at 1:15 p.m. Friday, October 2, the Austin Police Department confirmed the shuttered portion of southbound Interstate 35 would remain closed for several more hours “in order to clean up significant debris.”<\/p>\n

“Please find a substitute route for your commute home today,” officials wrote online. “Drive safely.”<\/p>\n

A portion of Interstate 35 is shuttered in Texas’ capital city after a semi-truck struck a bridge<\/a> above the highway, spurring road closures.<\/p>\n

The Austin Police Department said southbound I-35 at 11th and 12th streets is shut down save for the far shoulder following the bridge strike, according to a social media post just after 11 a.m. on Friday, October 2. Police officials noted the roadway cannot be reopened until officials with the Texas Department of Transportation’s Austin District classify it as safe.<\/p>\n

On its end, the Texas Department of Transportation’s Austin District confirmed the bridge strike on social media, reiterating all lanes are closed as a result.<\/p>\n

Those traveling near downtown Austin are advised to seek alternative routes to avoid congestion and delays. Online, traffic database resource SigAlert<\/a> reported traffic by the strike site near\u00a0exits 234 and 235 is backed up to East 51st Street. Both city and TxDOT traffic cameras highlight backed up traffic near the impact site.<\/p>\n

Exactly one week ago, a similar incident happened along the Lone Star State’s major highway arterial. Southbound I-35 at Onion Creek Parkway shut down around 5:45 a.m. on Friday, September 25 due to a bridge strike. No injuries were affiliated with\u00a0the incident, but it did impact commuters during the weekday morning rush hour.
