Texas Southern University has more than just started its 10-year transformation plan<\/a>, as three new buildings are set for construction on campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Texas Southern<\/a> has broken ground on three new buildings: the Catalyst for Urban Transformation, the Health and Wellness Center, and the Nabrit Science Building. The projects were funded by more than $95 million from the State of Texas as part of the state’s Capital Construction Assistance Projects. All three buildings are anticipated to open in 2027, the university’s centennial year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTexas Southern is moving forward with a focus on investment in facilities and infrastructure that support university integrity and student success,\u201d President J.W. Crawford III said at a groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month. “Today is a pivotal first step in the reimagining of Texas Southern University.\u201d<\/p>\n

The university’s master plan and the more than 20 projects planned over the next 10 years aim to improve the University’s functions and infrastructure. The three buildings kicking off the major project focus on creating space for students and the city of Houston to feel connected, providing academic amenities and facilities that not only function better but look better.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Along with the aesthetic hopes for the new buildings, they also drive home a major university\u2014becoming a high-end research institution.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the university’s plan, the Nabrit Science Center will be TSU’s<\/a> state-of-the-art research hub as a major effort to attract research funding and provide an environment that will create a new generation of thinkers and problem solvers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Catalyst for Urban Transformation building will focus on workforce development, graduate education, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies to address issues like economic advancement, strengthen communities, and further drive the TSU’s research activity goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Health and Wellness Center will expand access to health education, wellness resources, and preventive care initiatives. Along with its academic and research initiatives, the Health and Wellness Center will be partnering with Greater Third Ward and the City of Houston; the facility will be able to provide important health services and information for families in the surrounding community. The current health and wellness center on campus offers students services like vision exams, mental health services, seasonal flu shots, and more. According to the University, the new centers’ reach will be expanded, as well as their services.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cResearch at Texas Southern is expanding from our neighborhoods to new frontiers, including collaborations with NASA Johnson Space Center scientists and astronauts and successful experiments conducted in space,\u201d\u00a0 Michelle John, Vice President of Research and Innovation, said at the groundbreaking ceremony.\u00a0 “Texas Southern is building the research infrastructure needed to drive innovation, prepare the next generation of scientists and deliver discoveries that have global impact.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

On September 24, Texas Southern, along with Prairie View A&M University, received $4.2 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Supplemental Historically Black Colleges and Universities Mandatory Grants program. According to the Department of Education, the funds support physical infrastructure, academic resources, and other institutional needs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
