Illustration by Ryleigh Hood<\/a><\/p>\nThe College of Science is hosting its annual Health Professions Week, a series of events to educate students interested in careers in healthcare, from Monday to Friday. <\/p>\n
Health Professions Week began in 2023 as a way to help students connect with peers and healthcare professionals while building important skills, Health Professions director Sandy Hobart said in an email. <\/p>\n
\u201cI believe preparing students for long-term success goes beyond traditional academic experiences in the classroom, especially for pre-health students,\u201d Hobart said. <\/p>\n
Here is a list of the events.<\/p>\n
Are You Being Replaced? How AI is Influencing Clinical Care<\/p>\n
To begin Health Professions Week, students can hear about the effect of artificial intelligence on the field from 3 to 4:20 p.m. Monday in Room 194 of the Science and Engineering Innovation and Research Building. <\/p>\n
Alum Career Lab: Discover Science Careers<\/p>\n
College of Science alums will speak to students about the variety of careers they can pursue from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday in Room 294 of the SEIR Building. Students can hear from a food scientist, a microbiologist, a pharmacology research associate and an assistant director of clinical nutrition and patient services. <\/p>\n
Focus Check: Free Vision Screenings<\/p>\n
Prevent Blindness Texas and the Pre-Optometry Professional Society are providing free vision screenings from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 198 of the SEIR Building. <\/p>\n
Terror, Tears and Triumph: Tackling High-Stakes Exams<\/p>\n
Students can get educational tips and hear from prehealth students who have previously taken admissions tests such as the MCAT, DAT and GRE from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in Room 294 of the SEIR Building. <\/p>\n
Beyond \u2018I Want to Help People\u2019: Peer to Peer Interview Prep<\/p>\n
Students preparing for graduate school or careers can practice their interviewing skills with peers, faculty and staff and get feedback from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday in Room 194 of the SEIR Building. <\/p>\n
The event is meant to be a low-stakes practice opportunity for students. <\/p>\n
\u201cInterviewing for graduate school or careers is an important component to career success and this can be daunting, requiring practice,\u201d Hobart said. <\/p>\n
Perspectives from PA Professionals<\/p>\n
To celebrate National Physician Assistant and Physician Associate Week, students can hear from students and professionals in the field about the career path. The event is from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday in Room 294 of the SEIR Building. <\/p>\n
Joint Admission Medical Program Info and Networking Session<\/p>\n
Students can learn about the steps to medical school and the Joint Admission Medical Program from scholars, alums and the program\u2019s assistant director of student success from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 298 of the SEIR Building. <\/p>\n
Future Healthcare Professionals in Action: Clinical Skills Demo<\/p>\n
Students can see demonstrations of clinical skills such as suturing and injections from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the Social Work and Smart Hospital\u2019s outdoor plaza. <\/p>\n
The event is a collaboration between students taking Tracy Munk-Martin\u2019s essential medical skills course and student organizations. An ambulance will be on site for skills demonstrations. <\/p>\n
