The cubs are the first-ever Sumatran cubs born at the Fort Worth Zoo, and the first tiger cubs born at the zoo since 2008.

FORT WORTH, Texas — History has been made at the Fort Worth Zoo with the arrival of two critically endangered Sumatran tiger cubs, marking the first time the rare subspecies has ever been born at the facility.

The female cubs, born July 1, also represent the zoo’s first tiger births in nearly two decades — the last being a litter of Malayan tigers in 2008 — and the first born in the renovated Predators of Asia & Africa habitat, which opened in 2023.

The sisters were born to first-time mother Ndari and father Rakan. While the newborns weighed just 3 to 4 pounds and stretched roughly 10 inches at birth—about the size of a teddy bear—they have quickly flourished. At 12 weeks old, the cubs now weigh 18 and 20 pounds and measure up to 29 inches, comparable in size to large pumpkins.

Distinct Personalities and Indonesian Names

Keepers have selected names that reflect the cubs’ distinct temperaments and honor their native origin on the Indonesian island of Sumatra:

Barani (meaning “brave”): The smaller of the two, described by animal care staff as a “spitfire” who constantly initiates play-fights.

Malu (meaning “shy or reserved”): The larger, more independent sister who frequently seeks out quiet spots in neighboring stalls to nap.

“It’s always exciting to welcome new babies and watch them grow here at the Zoo,” said Ramona Bass, chairman of the Fort Worth Zoo. “But we’re hopeful that these cubs will inspire a new generation to learn about and care for their wild counterparts and the future of this critically endangered species.”

Milestones and Maternal Care

Zoo keepers report that Ndari is displaying ideal maternal behaviors, actively nursing, bathing, and carrying her daughters around the den. Over the past several weeks, Barani and Malu have reached several key developmental milestones, including:

Mastering running, jumping, and climbing skills.

Transitioning to a partial meat diet while continuing to nurse.

Practicing balance and receiving initial exposure to water.

Engaging in social play and play-fighting with each other and their mother.

Crucial Step for Conservation

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), fewer than 650 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild, severely threatened by deforestation and habitat destruction.

The births highlight the success of the zoo’s $123 million “A Wilder Vision” campaign, which doubled the size of the tiger habitat in 2023. The enlarged yard and upgraded facilities allowed the Fort Worth Zoo to expand its participation in cooperative breeding programs alongside other North American institutions, aimed at maintaining a genetically diverse population in managed care.

Public Debut Pending

The cubs remain behind the scenes while keepers evaluate their stamina and navigation skills, ensuring they can safely negotiate the habitat’s outdoor features and deep pools.

Zoo officials hope Barani and Malu will make their public debut in the coming weeks and will announce exact dates via the zoo’s website and social media channels.

[10
116,118,117
post-456067","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth-headlines","tag-fort-worth-news
["GET
