A new two-day event during Fiesta season aims to offer affordable celebration for San Antonio residents, but it’s not affiliated with the festival or canceled NIOSA.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A new two-day event is drawing attention on social media as organizers plan to hold it during next year’s Fiesta season, but they stress it is not affiliated with Fiesta or Night in Old San Antonio.

Some people on social media have referred to the event as “NIOSA 2.0” following the cancellation of Night in Old San Antonio, or NIOSA, last month. Organizers say that is not what they are trying to create.

“Times are so hard right now, and I feel like the community needs a little boost, like give some kind of excitement,” said Cecilia Chavez of 210 La Chismosa, one of the event’s organizers.

The event does not yet have an official name. It is being organized by 210 La Chismosa, the Gamez Law Firm and Hope at Heart. They are still looking for more sponsors.

Chavez said organizers want to provide an affordable celebration for the community.

“There’s other events coming up as well. A lot of them are being canceled or just stopping, and I just want to make something more affordable so that the community can come out and enjoy themselves,” Chavez said.

The event comes after the organizers of NIOSA announced the cancellation of the longtime Fiesta event because of funding issues.

Chavez said organizers chose to hold the new event during Fiesta season because San Antonio is already celebrating and the weather is typically favorable.

“Oh, the weather’s good, the city’s already celebrating and why not just throw that in there as well,” Chavez said.

Event will benefit Hope at Heart

Organizers say the event will have a charitable component, with proceeds benefiting Hope at Heart, a children’s cancer foundation that supports Bexar County families who have a child battling cancer or sickle cell disease.

Jason Massiatte of Hope at Heart said he hopes the event can become an annual tradition and create additional opportunities to support local families.

“I think this is an opportunity to make this an annual event and create other events for the community, and ensuring that people know that they’re not alone in their fight,” Massiatte said. “That’s what I’m excited about is providing some kind of resource for them.”

The event is planned for two days at King of Paddle on Nolan Street.

Michelle Ramirez, another organizer, said they have heard from San Antonio residents who want opportunities to celebrate that are more accessible and affordable.

“A lot of people have voiced out their experiences being a part of Fiesta, especially like the community itself, San Antonio itself,” Ramirez said. “The people who live in San Antonio also want to celebrate. And I just feel like a lot of that has been lost throughout the years because of the outrageous prices.”

The event will be ticketed. Organizers said they hope to begin selling tickets within the next month.
