After six were shot at a Dallas party, a community coordinator says neighborhoods feel left behind. His group is trying something concrete: solar streetlights.<\/p>\n

DALLAS, Texas \u2014 Debris scattered along South Barry Avenue was one of the few signs Sunday of the violence that broke out there in the early morning hours.<\/p>\n

Dallas police say six people were shot<\/a> at about 3:10 a.m. Oct. 4 at a party in the 1400 block of South Barry Avenue. At least three were taken to a hospital by Dallas Fire-Rescue, and the others got there on their own. Police say none of the injuries are life-threatening and all six victims are stable.<\/p>\n

There was also a crash. According to police, people inside a vehicle and others at the scene exchanged gunfire. Police say the vehicle, which had several people inside, crashed shortly afterward. Police also say it remains to be determined whether the driver is among the six victims.<\/p>\n

Investigators are working several leads, but no arrests have been made, according to police.<\/p>\n

WFAA spoke with several people on the block who heard the gunshots or saw the commotion afterward. None of them wanted to speak publicly.<\/p>\n

“I think just people are afraid,” said Yafeuh Balogun, a coordinator with Community Movement Builders.<\/p>\n

Balogun said, when violence happens in Dallas, he hears from people who feel their neighborhoods have been left behind.<\/p>\n

“I hear not enough funds, not enough infrastructure, not enough education, not enough opportunities and resources flow into the community,” he said.<\/p>\n

So his organization is trying something concrete: solar-powered streetlights. Community Movement Builders bought the lights and installed them in dark neighborhoods to help prevent crime, and Balogun’s neighbors have noticed.<\/p>\n
