For some residents, the wide array of attractions and cuisine draws them to San Antonio. But like any city, it has its cons; one widely voiced is ongoing road construction.<\/p>\n
Locals gathered on a San Antonio-based Reddit page<\/a> to share the one thing they would change about the city, if given the chance. Folks definitely spoke their minds. The post, shared on Wednesday, September 30, drew nearly 400 comments in three days, with replies ranging from five-word answers to several paragraphs.<\/p>\n “The disinterest in functional public transportation,” one user wrote.<\/p>\n As one of the major metropolitan areas without light rail, San Antonio faces frequent criticism for its lack of an efficient public transportation system. According to the United States Census Bureau<\/a>, San Antonio was the seventh-most populous city as of July 1, 2024. It saw the fourth-largest increase between July 1, 2023, and July 1, 2024, among cities with populations of 20,000 or more.<\/p>\n This population boost contributes to heavy traffic on the roads, but it can also pose issues for those temporarily without an operating vehicle who are trying to get to work or school. While VIA Metropolitan Transit operates locally, some claim<\/a> it is “inefficient” and that “the buses barely run a consistent schedule.”\u00a0<\/p>\n An attempt at progress, though slow, is active. VIA secured $267 million in federal funding to create a rapid bus line system, MySA reported in 2024. Called The Green Line, it’s a pair of rapid transit bus lines running the length of San Pedro, connecting the Airport to the missions and running through downtown. The Silver Line will connect the East and West sides. Construction is underway across segments 1 through 8 of the VIA Rapid Green Line corridor, according to the VIA website<\/a>.<\/p>\n There have also been discussions about a passenger rail line between Austin and San Antonio<\/a>. Studies have been conducted, and a 62-page feasibility analysis<\/a>, obtained by KXAN, was released in August of this year. However, no official plan has been put in motion to build it.<\/p>\n Other Reddit users said they wished they could remove “the poor pet ownership practices,” “neglectful pet owners,” or “irresponsible pet owners,” claiming that many animals are left stranded or to roam (and potentially get injured) in the city.
