Of those, 841, or 69.3%, were confidential reports.

The university reported 47 investigations.

Not every report, however, is made with the intention of starting an investigation. UT’s report shows some people sought only support or resources, while others reported an incident but did not file a formal complaint.

The university also listed other reasons a disciplinary process may not be initiated, including cases in which the respondent was not affiliated with UT or there was insufficient information to investigate at the time.

Neil said that for some survivors, getting to the point of telling someone what happened can take time.

“Victims never want to get anyone else in trouble,” Neil said. “Victims will internalize, and mull, and really resist the reality of what they lived through for as long as they can until they hit their breaking point. And they understand that if they don’t say something, someone else is going to get hurt by the same person.”

For Neil, beyond the reports, investigations and data, there is another message she wants survivors to hear.

“You’re not alone,” Neil said. “The way that we fix the problem is by meeting each other in each other’s pain, and that’s how we mend the world.”

How to report sexual assault at UT Austin

UT Austin students have several options for reporting sexual assault or seeking support, and making a report to the university does not necessarily start a formal grievance process.

Anyone can report an incident to UT’s Title IX Office through its online reporting form, by emailing titleix@austin.utexas.edu or by calling 512-471-0419. Reports can also be submitted anonymously, although the university says remaining anonymous may limit its ability to respond.

Students who want to pursue a formal university grievance process can file a formal complaint through the Title IX Office. Reporting to police is a separate process from a university Title IX investigation.

Students who are not ready to make an official report can also seek confidential support. UT’s Confidential Case Manager for Students can help students understand their options and connect them with academic, housing, medical or financial accommodations without requiring them to file a Title IX report.

If there is an immediate threat or an emergency, call 911.

An attorney who has worked with survivors for two decades says campus data alone can’t capture the full…

[11
132,134,133
post-456705","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news
["GET
