SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Five San Antonio artists came together at the Pearl to celebrate D\u00eda de los Muertos through calaveras: four-foot skulls, each telling a personal story through the artist\u2019s own style.<\/p>\n
Sisters Manola and Maria Ramirez\u2019s calavera was inspired by their grandmother. <\/p>\n
\u201cShe used to sew a lot, and she always loved her garden,\u201d Manola Ramirez said, \u201cso for me personally, I was like, why don\u2019t we sort of embody that with embroidery and plants.\u201d<\/p>\n
The two sisters have been working on designs and projects together for years.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy sister and I were really good. I think since we\u2019ve been working together for a long time, whenever we need that extra sort of support, that\u2019s how we create,\u201d Manola Ramirez said. \u201cAt the end of it, we both want the same thing, which is a good outcome.\u201d <\/p>\n
For the Ramirez sisters, D\u00eda de los Muertos is a tradition rooted in childhood memories they now carry into adulthood.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a very special thing to be able to share that with people who don\u2019t know about it,\u201d Manola Ramirez said. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhen it comes to D\u00eda de los Muertos, you\u2019re with community. So I remember having that moment and going to clean the tombstone and putting flowers and candles,\u201d Maria Ramirez said. \u201cIt feels weirdly magical.\u201d <\/p>\n
Four more calaveras made by local artists will be on display from Oct. 23 through Nov. 5 at the Pearl, leading up to a free D\u00eda de los Muertos celebration. Before the event, artists may be found live painting on weekends.<\/p>\n
