Police in West Texas<\/a> made a grisly discovery this week, which was quickly accompanied by an arrest. The Amarillo Police Department on Friday announced Leonard Torres of Amarillo<\/a> had been arrested and charged with aggravated assault with\u00a0deadly weapon amid finding a woman’s body buried behind a garage.<\/p>\n

The discovery occurred Thursday. Amarillo Police’s homicide unit was tipped off that a Colorado woman had allegedly been shot and buried in the city, according to a Friday news release. The homicide unit then identified witnesses before leading to Torres, 48, who was allegedly driving the vehicle witnesses said was involved in the incident.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After what police say was “a short pursuit,” Torres was taken into custody.<\/p>\n

Police then discovered a burial site on the 3100 block of Orange Street in the north side of the city, about three miles from downtown Amarillo. The area is adjacent to an elementary school park.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The site was behind a detached garage, police say. There, they found the body of 31-year-old Faith Smith, a Colorado resident. Police said her body would be sent for an autopsy. A photo of the garage shows it’s under construction. Wood planks are splayed about the ground, and a dig site sits about 15 feet from the entryway of the garage.\u00a0<\/p>\n
