State House District 108 contains some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Texas, including the Park Cities, Preston Hollow, Bluffview and parts of Uptown and East Dallas. Southern Methodist University sits inside it, as does NorthPark Center and the urban oasis of Turtle Creek.<\/p>\n
Morgan Meyer has represented the district since 2015. He has been an effective lawmaker, able to parse the intricacies of property tax proposals and public education funding \u2014 and to listen sympathetically as parents testified about losing their young daughters during last year\u2019s flash flood tragedy at Camp Mystic. He has earned another term in office.<\/p>\n
Meyer, a Republican, has lived in the district for almost three decades. He received his undergraduate degree from SMU and his law degree from Washington and Lee University. He leads the House Ways and Means Committee, a powerful committee that has jurisdiction over bills concerning local and state taxes and property tax appraisals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Texas homeowners may not know his name, but Meyer is one of the legislators they should thank for significantly cutting their property tax bills. While the House and Senate have often taken<\/a> different approaches to lowering homeowners\u2019 taxes, members of both chambers have agreed to raise the homestead exemption from $40,000 to $140,000 since early 2023. Lawmakers boosted the exemption<\/a> for disabled homeowners and those age 65 and older to $60,000. The state increased its share of public school funding to help offset the revenue lost by local school districts.<\/p>\n Meyer also led the successful effort to significantly increase the exemption for business personal property tax, which is a tax paid on the value of a company\u2019s inventory and equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n His other legislative priority has been protecting children and victims of human trafficking. He authored bills to support victims of child sex abuse and absorbed hours of heartbreaking testimony as the chairman of the House committee on the July 2025 floods. The\u00a0resulting safety laws<\/a> require children\u2019s camps to better prepare for emergencies.<\/p>\n Meyer is among the local lawmakers who worked to find state money to help build a Dallas police training academy at the University of North Texas at Dallas.\u00a0<\/p>\n His challenger is Democrat Allison Mitchell, an entrepreneur who grew up in the district. As the mother of a child with developmental disabilities, she said her priority is ensuring that the state adequately funds public schools. She strongly opposes the new educational voucher program. Mitchell is smart and clearly capable of leadership, but she does not match Meyer in this race. \u00a0<\/p>\n Here are some other reasons we recommend Meyer: He strongly denounced the overtly racist rhetoric of Bo French, the GOP candidate for Texas Railroad Commission. His campaigns are positive and focus on relevant issues. He is not given to grandstanding. He rejects the idea that every bill must reflect a partisan viewpoint.\u00a0<\/p>\n That\u2019s worth cheering in this day and age.<\/p>\n
