While Houston’s food scene is usually about dinner, a tiny cafe in Montrose has built a big legacy<\/a> among the breakfast and lunch crowd\u2014decades after opening its doors.<\/a><\/p>\n

I nearly drove right past La Guadalupana Bakery & Cafe<\/a> before my GPS let me know that I’d arrived. Squeezed into a compact corner strip center alongside a food mart and a washateria, the cafe is easy to miss for newcomers (like me) unfamiliar with all of the city’s longtime spots.<\/p>\n

But after one visit, I understood why this tucked-away cafe has earned a loyal following among longtime local foodies.<\/p>\n

After snagging one of the few open spots in the shared lot, I stepped inside to find an equally small but cozy space. Diners were trickling in and out before the restaurant closed mid-afternoon.<\/p>\n

La Guadalupana has been serving Mexican cuisine to the Montrose community since 1995. Chef Trancito Diaz and his son Roberto originally opened the neighborhood spot just as a bakery. Requests for homemade Mexican food<\/a> led to them expanding the menu. That’s why there’s a large laminated menu of tacos and tamales and a glass case of baked goods on display right when you talk through the door.<\/p>\n

Before I even ordered, I was eyeing the buttery croissants, churros and empanadas. But I was hit with an even warmer welcome from a smiling server who told me to grab a seat wherever I wanted\u2014a casual ritual I quickly realized was commonplace for guests dining in.<\/p>\n

La Guadalupana is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., (except on Mondays). It took me a while to decide whether I wanted breakfast, lunch or both.<\/p>\n

Would chips and salsa be appropriate for the “most important meal of the day?” Was it too early for a smoky plate of fajitas or a cheesy quesadilla? Who decided when it’s appropriate to eat certain meals? Did it even matter if it’d be delicious either way?<\/p>\n

These are the questions that ran through my mind before I just resorted to asking my waitress for her recommendations\u2014which ended up making my decision the more harder since she hyped up about half the menu (and as beloved as La Guadalupana is, who can blame her?)<\/p>\n

Curious with a craving for just about everything, I went with three classic breakfast staples: a spicy plate of chilaquiles covered in salsa with tender pork, a scrambled serving of migas with chorizo, onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, tortilla strips and eggs, along with saucy huevos rancheros prepared with two overeasy eggs.<\/p>\n

After just a few bites, I could see why La\u00a0Guadalupana has earned its stay. There are more choices on the menu than places to sit, but the cozy space makes you want to settle in and stay awhile whether you’re getting breakfast or lunch. I saw that appeal firsthand during the morning-to-afternoon shift, with some lingering over coffee and others placing orders without even needing to skim through the menu.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In its 31 years of business, La\u00a0Guadalupana has kept its most popular dishes front and center\u2014bringing generations of diners into its small space for big flavor.
