The Texas Tailgaters are headed to the Banana Bowl.

With their season on the line, the No. 2-seeded Tailgaters delivered a 2-1 victory over the No. 3-seeded Loco Beach Coconuts on Sunday at Historic Grayson Stadium. Texas then winning the tie-breaking showdown to secure its spot in the inaugural Banana Ball Championship League title game.

For the Tailgaters, the trip to the championship comes after a season filled with adversity, injuries and a fight to reach the postseason’s biggest stage.

“There’s so many emotions,” Tailgaters outfielder Kyle Martin said after the game. “I’m just so happy. So proud of our team and our coaching staff and how well we’ve carried ourselves through this whole entire season with some injuries and whatnot. And we just continue to fight and fight and fight. And here we are going to the championship.”

Texas set the tone early with a spectacular defensive play from outfielder Zach Watson, who pulled off a backflip catch to get the crowd energized.

The game’s first point came in the sixth inning when Tailgaters’ Indiana Stanley leaped over Coconuts pitcher Joe Filomeno to score. The Coconuts challenged the call, but the ruling was upheld.

Texas added another point in the seventh inning thanks to a two-run home run from Martin, who sent the ball soaring to right-center field.

On the mound, Brett Sanchez delivered a standout performance to help secure the victory. Sanchez pitched seven innings, recorded three strikeouts, allowed six hits and gave up just one run.

The Tailgaters’ ability to execute in key moments proved to be the difference in a tightly contested matchup.

For Texas, Sunday’s victory was about more than advancing to the championship. It was the culmination of a season-long effort to prove what the team could accomplish together.

Tailgaters player Brant Allen described the feeling of reaching the Banana Bowl as surreal, pointing to the bond the team has built throughout the season.

“It feels like we’re all connected, like a brotherhood,” Allen said. “It’s something we worked hard to do the whole season and to get it done and just know that it just happened. I can’t believe it.”

Allen said the team played with a chip on its shoulder, especially with its season hanging in the balance.

“Our pitchers did their job. Our hitters did their job. We executed. We made defensive plays. Everybody did their part,” Allen said. “When you can show everything up together, it’s how you get it done.”

Now, the Tailgaters will have a chance to put that chemistry to the test against the Savannah Bananas in the league’s first championship game.
