LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – \u201cThank the good lord that there are good men and women who will raise their hand, step forward, put the uniform on and put everything on the line for this experiment in liberty and democracy,\u201d congressman Jodey Arrington said.<\/p>\n
Many in West Texas made their way to the Silent Wings Museum on Tuesday in honor of Veterans Day. <\/p>\n
November 11 was initially intended to be Armistice Day, a day to honor veterans of World War l. It became a federal holiday in 1938, but after the events of World War ll and the Korean War, the name was updated to include more members of service.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 83rd congress, at the urge of veterans of service organizations, amended the act of 1938 by striking out the word armistice and inserting in its place the word veterans,\u201d Ron Milam, professor of military history at Texas Tech, said.<\/p>\n
Mayor Mark McBrayer has a special connection with this date. His father served in Iwo Jima as a marine in World War ll, while his son served as a Navy seal. McBrayer took a trip to Normandy with his wife in June during the anniversary of D-Day and felt a true appreciation for what it took for him to be standing there at that time.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a tremendous opportunity for me to see how much, more than 80 years later, the people there in Normandy still honor the sacrifice of soldiers who came there to liberate them,\u201d McBrayer said. \u201cThey have not forgotten, and if they don\u2019t forget that sacrifice, we certainly cannot forget that sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Performances from the Estacado High School color guard and the All Saints Episcopal children\u2019s choir closed out the event. Arrington says November 11th is a date we can\u2019t afford to forget and this commemoration stands to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love Veterans Day because nothing inspires me more, nothing prepares me more to go back into the arena and do battle for our country, for our freedoms, for our values, like you. God bless.\u201d<\/p>\n
